Srinagar, May 18: A major football trial event under the Kashmir Champions Football League commenced today at the newly developed FIFA-approved astro turf ground in Baramulla, drawing enthusiastic participation from young players across the district.
The Under-16 trials, organised by the J&K Sports Council, witnessed participation from aspiring footballers as part of a wider talent-hunt initiative aimed at promoting grassroots football.
Officials said professional coaches and experienced selectors had been deputed to identify talented players during the selection process.
The trials are scheduled to be conducted in different districts of J&K. Participants welcomed the initiative, saying the trials had brought professional-level opportunities to the doorstep of youth in north Kashmir.
“This is a big tournament being organised by the Sports Council. The trials will be held in every district. We are happy that such opportunities have been brought to our doorstep,” a participant said.
MLA Baramulla Javid Hassan Baig, who was present on the occasion, said the Sports Council had undertaken several initiatives in recent years to strengthen sports infrastructure across J&K.
“For some time now, the Sports Council has been taking many initiatives and ensuring better infrastructure. This turf is of international standards and such events can change the lives of youngsters,” Beigh said.
He said efforts were also underway to identify additional land for sports facilities in Baramulla and upgrade existing infrastructure despite space constraints.
“We want to create another football ground as well. We will do our maximum within the limited land available in Baramulla,” he added.
