New Delhi, May 4:
Lady luck smiled on two kids from the Capital today as they earned themselves tickets to the upcoming football World Cup after being chosen as ‘adidas FIFA flagbearers’ for the mega event in Brazil.
In the presence of star cricketer Kevin Pietersen, who is a brand ambassador of the sportswear giant, Mihir Batra from St. Columba’s School and Jasen Moses of Mother’s International School, were selected out of 500 kids from the city, and they will be flying to Sao Paulo for a pre-quarterfinal match on July 1.
Pietersen announced the name of the winners. The World Cup is slated to be held from June 12 to July 13.
Six children, four to be selected from other cities, will head to Sao Paulo to see a round of 16 match at the mecca of football.
About the initiative, Pietersen said, “Going to Brazil for a FIFA World Cup has to be the most incredible experience for any football fan and I am glad these kids are getting a shot to make their dream a reality. The atmosphere here is brilliant and this is a great initiative from adidas to provide such an opportunity to these young fans.”
Tushar Goculdas, brand director, adidas India, added, “The adidas FIFA Fairplay Flag Bearers Program is the most exciting opportunity for young football fans in the country- bringing them close to the action on the pitch and the players they love.”
A Chelsea fan, Pietersen said he is friends with veterans Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole and John Terry.
“Chelsea is my favourite team. I have got good friends at Chelsea like Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole and John Terry. I live in Chelsea and also underwent my rehabilitation there when I had my Achilles tendon injury.” (PTI)
