SRINAGAR, May 11: With an aim to identify and nurture budding sports persons from the local remote areas, the ‘Dagger Sports Nursery’ in Uri, which is a joint initiative of the Sports Department Uri and Army commenced, a training camp for the Zonal Sports Championship.
A Defence spokesman said this camp will also facilitate selection of promising prospects for long term coaching and training at Uri. “Army is providing sports equipment and additional diet to ensure best performance and coaches from both organisations will ensure professional, long term training to selected athletes and sports persons to enable them to excel at the higher levels,” he said.
The Defence spokesman said the Sports Nursery is run by Army Garrison at Uri and will focus on basketball and athletics for boys and girls to promote representation of Kashmiri youth in these disciplines at the national level. Special arrangements have been made to encourage girls by including lady supervisors. Expert advice will also be provided by the nationally renowned athletic coach, Manoj Dewalkar of Pune, he added.
