JAMMU, June 2: The first ever Jammu District Sports Meet for Hearing and Speech impaired children concluded with a well- attended prize distribution function, here today.
More than fifty differently abled youth participated with enthusiasm and excitement in the 2-day sports event organised by All Jammu & Kashmir Association of the Deaf in collaboration with J&K State Sports Council and J&K Samaj Kalyan Kendra Jammu.
The games played at the Meet included Badminton, 100 Mtr race, Chess, and Carrom. Samaj Kalyan Kendra runs the only School in the State for Deaf and Dumb.
Divisional Sports Officer, J&K Sports Council Ravi Singh was the chief guest on the valedictory function, while Principal, Govt. Hari Singh Higher Secondary School, JK Padha was the guest of honour. They distributed medals and certificates among the winners. Suraj Bhan Singh of J&K Judo Association was also present on the occasion.
The President of Samaj Kalyan Kendra, K B Jandial lauded the initiative of Kamal Nain Bhan and his wife Madhbala Bhan, both deaf & dumb, President and Vice President of the Association and said that such sports events provided an opportunity to these specially abled youth to display their talent and prove that they are no less talented and competent as compared to normal youth.
Jandial said that the Samaj Kalyan Kendra has taken many steps to encourage these children, both in the academics and sports. He said the Kendra will be presenting cash awards to outstanding students.
He said that the School for Hearing Handicapped has been adopted by the Central Govt Pensioners’ Welfare Association. Impressed by the hundred percent results in all Board Examinations this year, a member of the Association, M L Kachro has donated money to give cash award of Rs 1000 each to passed deaf and dumb students.
Divisional Sports Officer assured full support from the J&K State Sports Council to the Association for Deaf and Samaj Kalyan Kendra in promoting the hidden talent of these differently abled youth including free of cost coaching, use of Council’s sports infrastructure for training and even organising such sports events free of cost.
Principal Padha also complimented the organizers for successful conclusion of the event.
Kamal Nain Bhan and Roshan Bhan also spoke on the occasion.
