Sports inculcates discipline, self-confidence, team spirit among youth: Chib

SRINAGAR, Aug 30: Behibagh Cricket Club, Kulgam won Friends-XI T-20 Cricket Tournament defeating Homselibugh Cricket Club by 3 runs which was played today at Behibagh Stadium, Kulgam.
Minister for Youth Services and Sports R S Chib was the chief guest, while as MLA, Kulgam M. Y Tarigami was the guest of honour on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Chib dwelt in detail the efforts of the government for construction and upgradation of sports infrastructure to facilitate the sports persons of the State. He said that numerous new sports stadia, indoor stadia and play-fields have been developed during the regime of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, besides upgrading existing stadia and playfields.
Terming sports an important component in life, the Minister said that it inculcates discipline, self-confidence and team spirit among youth. He said that Central Government is contemplating to include the physical education as compulsory subject in the curriculum, adding that the marks attainted in the physical education would be included in the over-all merit of the candidates.
Responding to the demands, the Minister directed Secretary, J&K State Sports Council for preparing Detailed Project Report (DPRs) for construction of Pavillion, main gate and levelling of Behibagh Stadium.
Terming the youth as the future of the nation, MLA,  M Y Tarigami said that this tournament was a joint effort by the youth to shape their future. He appreciated the youth of the area for organizing the tournament at Behibagh stadium which is the unison of Kulgam and Shopian districts.
As many as 55 teams from Kulgam and Shopian districts took part during the two-month long tournament organized by JK Democratic Youth Federation.
Later, the Minister gave away trophy, medal and cash prizes  to winner and runner-up teams and the players who performed best during the tournament. He announced Rs. 10,000 to winning team, Rs. 7,000 for runner-up, Rs. 5,000 each to man of the match and man of the series and Rs. 25,00 each to the commentators as a token of appreciation. He also announced that the teams reached to the quarter final of the tournament would be provided one cricket kit.
Among others, Deputy Commissioner, Kulgam Jehangir Mir, Director, Youth Services and Sports S. Jaipal Singh, Secretary, J&K State Sports Council, Dalip Thussu, senior officers of district administration and thousand of sports lovers were present to witness the match.
