JAMMU, Feb 28: Director General Youth Services and Sports, Navin Agarwal today said that the culture of establishing Sports Academies in Jammu and Kashmir will boost talent of the budding sportspersons, especially those from rural areas.
He said that there is abundant talent in the field of sports in the rural areas, but the need is to tap it at the grass-root level to produce better sportspersons.
Mr Agarwal was speaking during an impressive and well attended inaugural ceremony of the 1st Drug Free Youth Gharota Cup T20 Cricket Tournament, being organized by Country Cricket Academy at village Gharota, here today.
Lauding the effort of the organizers in holding a cricketing extravaganza in a remote village, Mr Agarwal expressed satisfaction over the adequate infrastructure of the Country Cricket Academy and said that such venue can be an alternative location for conducting activities of the Department of Youth Services and Sports and other sports organizations or associations.
The Director General Sports was the chief guest on the occasion, while Kanchan Bala, Deputy Director Youth Services and Sports and Anjali Sharma, Deputy Director, Doordarshan Jammu were the guests of honour. SHO Gharota, Inspector Vinod Kundal was also present on the occasion.
Director Country Cricket Academy, Vivek Sharma presented vote of thanks, while convener technical committee, Rajesh Dhar conducted proceedings of the programme.
In the inaugural match, JKP XI got better of Singh Cricket Club Akhnoor in a close contest by 14 runs.
Earlier, batting first, JKP XI made a modest total of 138 runs in the stipulated 20 overs. Jatin was the star performer who contributed unbeaten 57 runs off 34 balls, studded with 6 boundaries and 2 masive sixes, while Rompy Sharma, Gurdip Singh and Rajesh Gill contributed 24, 15 and 13 runs to the total respectively. For SCC Akhnoor, Roshan and Dilawar took 2 wickets each, while Suny claimed one.
In reply, Singh Club scored 125 for the loss of 7 wickets in the allotted overs to lose the match by 14 runs. Rahul scored brilliant 55 runs off 47 balls, while Jimmy and Deepak contributed 21 runs each. For JKP XI, skipper Rajesh Gill and Rompy took 2 wickets each, while Vishal Singh Bhau, Irshad and Amir claimed one wicket each. Jatin of JKP XI was declared man of the match for his magnificent knock.
The match was officiated by Shashi Pal and Sahil Sharma as umpires, while Lakshay Khajuria was the scorer.
