Shreya wins first Gold for UT J&K

JAMMU, Nov 10: Continuing her scintillating performance at International and national levels, a prominent and ace fencer from J&K Shreya Gupta, a class 10th student of Presentation Convent School ,Jammu has again brought laurels to the newly formed UT by becoming Junior U-19 National Fencing champion.
In the ongoing 27th Junior National Fencing Championships, being held at Bhopal from November 9 to 12, Shreya won individual Gold medal in Sabre event by defeating all her opponents without losing any bout in swashbuckling manner. In the semifinal, Shreya comprehensively defeated Poorna Singh from Madhya Pradesh and in final, Chanu L.Abi from Manipur by 15-7 and 15-4 points respectively.
By winning the individual Gold medal, Shreya has qualified for the upcoming International events like Asian Championships and World Championships to be held in 2020. Pertinent to say that in July 2018 Shreya has won first ever medal for the UT in Commonwealth Fencing Championship which was held at New Castle, England. Because of her excellent performance in National Fencing Championship in Gwalior in October 2017, she was declared the Best National Fencer of the Championship.
Shreya has already been selected as one of the potential elite sportsman by Sports Authority of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports for getting training in the proposed International level Sport Academies under Khelo India Scheme besides getting Scholarship and thus preparing for Mission Olympics 2024 and 2028.
Recently, recognizing her extraordinary achievements at national and international level competitions, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir has conferred her with State Award for year 2019 and Sher-I-Kashmir Award for 2018-19. She is a recipient of S Rangil Singh Award for 2018-19 presented by J&K Olympic Association and recently honoured by BJP UT Mahila Morcha on 7th November 2019.
Shreya owes her success mainly due to continuous efforts and support of J&K Amateur Fencing Association and Sports Council Coach Shotu Lal Sharma who has been imparting training to her tirelessly with grilling schedule, international player and referee Rashid Ahmed Chowdhary.
Last but not the least Shreya Gupta and her parents are all praise for the kind support, cooperation and time to time help of Secretary J&K Sport Council Nasim Javid Choudhary.
