JAMMU, May 6: Sprawling Buds School, Bantalab dominated the second day by winning Mini Girls’, Sub Junior Girls and Sub Junior Boys titles in the 17th edition of Jammu District Sport Climbing Competition which concluded today. Sejal Raina won the Mini Girls title, while the Sub Junior Girls and Sub Junior titles were claimed by Zuffi Shan Khatana and Rudra Partap Singh respectively.
However, KS Public School swept the Junior Boys category with Riteshwar Sharma, Dreshant Sharma and Ayush Bhat securing the first three positions.
The upset of the day was created by Himani Choudhary, comparatively a fresh climber, who dethroned the reigning champion Ambreen Fatima to bag the Women’s Speed Climbing title. Deepika Dutta clinched the third place. All the three medalists are students of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar.
The most interesting contest was witnessed in the Sub Junior Boys category in which Rudra Partap Singh, Randeep Singh Parihar, both of Sprawling Buds School and Achutam Dev Singh of DBN School, Talab Tillo topped the 40 ft high wall and the result was determined on the basis of time taken to reach the top of the wall. Accordingly, Rudra Partap was declared as winner, while Randeep and Achutam had to contend with second and third positions respectively.
The darling of the crowd, however, turned out to be Keshwam Dev Singh of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Nagrota, a diminutive climber, who with his clean climbing moves impressed every body and claimed the Mini Boys Title. Rahul Khajuria of Shiksha Niketan and Sutikshan Partap Singh of Sprawling Buds School bagged the second and third positions respectively.
In Mini Girls, Sejal Raina of Sprawling Buds School, Niharika Parihar of Shiksha Niketan School and Akanksha Sharma of St Xavier Convent Senior Secondary School, Barnai bagged top three positions respectively.
In Sub Junior Girls, Zuffi Shan Khatana of Sprawling Buds School, Aman Khalsa and Bhoomi Gupta, both of Shiksha Niketan School emerged winners.
In Boys (Speed Climbing), Parul Bhargav of KNIT, Nanit Sharma and Riteshwar Sharma, both of KS Public School emerged winners, whereas in Men category, Aman Arora, Sunil Chakaria and Bhanu Partap claimed top three positions.
It is worth mentioning here that this year Jammu district climbers who are zonal or national medalists had voluntarily opted out of the district competition so as to pave way for the budding climbers to come up. The move paid rich dividends as a new crop of talented climbers completely dominated the 2- day Championship.
On the valedictory function, Director of Sprawling Buds School Arti Sharma was the chief guest who along with Secretary Indian Mountaineering Foundation North Zone Committee gave away medals to the winners of the various categories. Arti Sharma, who had donated a climbing rope valuing Rs 12000 for the district competition promised further help in the shape of technical equipment for future competitions.
Among others present on the occasion included Director of Sprawling Buds School Rahul Sharma, Joint Secretary, Mountaineering Association of J&K Shawetica Khajuria, Shashi Kant, Present trainer of the State team, Manik Slathia, a trained mountaineer and a belayer, Sakshi Magotra, Sudarshan Singh, Usha Devi, Monika Aima, Monika, Fazal Ahmad and Satish Bhan, a sports organizer.
The championship in which about 250 boys and girls participated was organized by Mountaineering Association of J&K and sponsored by J&K State Sports Council.
Meanwhile, the Udhampur, Reasi and Samba District Sport Climbing Competitions have been postponed due to certain unavoidable reasons and will start from May 12.
