JAMMU, May 27: Shashi Kant of Maharishi Vidya Mandir and Pallavi Sharma of Shining Star High School, Muthi became the new State Champions in the men and women categories respectively whereas boys and girls titles were won by Abhishek Slathia of Oriental Academy and Kumari Bindia Sharma of National Academy High School, Udhampur in Lead climbing of the 13th J&K State Sport Climbing Championship organised by Mountaineering Association of J&K and sponsored by J&K State Sports Council, which concluded at Sprawling Buds School, Chinore.
In the remaining 4 categories, all the titles and 2nd and 3rd positions were won by new faces. While Shilpa Charak and Aman Dogra, both new climbers of Shining Star Academy bagged the Sub Junior Boys and Sub Junior Girls titles, another new climber of the same school Arun Deep Singh clinched the Mini Boys title. In the Mini Girls section, Asma Gul, a IIIrd standard student of Sprawling Buds School sprang a surprise to claim the title.
The best contest was, however, witnessed in the Mini Boys section in which 18 climbers topped the wall and the result was determined on the basis of time taken by the climbers to top the wall.
Highlight of the 2nd day was no doubt the superb performance of Shilpa Charak in the Sub Junior Girls category. Her climb was an outstanding exhibition of power and technique. The 13 year old lanky girl climbed immaculately from one hold to another making excellent climbing moves to top the wall in just 42 seconds.
About 200 climbers from Jammu, Udhampur, Anantnag, Kathua, Samba, Kupwara, Reasi, Kishtwar and Pulwama participated in the 2-day championship which was inaugurated by Sanjeet Khajuria, Asstt Director, Doordarshan Kendra, Jammu.
S Bhattacharjee, Chairman, Indian Mountaineering Foundation North Zone Committee was the chief guest at the concluding function who distributed prizes and medals to the winners.
In the 2-day championship, Mitra Ghosh, a national judge in sport climbing was the President of Jury whereas Paras Ram, a national Route Setter was the chief route setter. Both were assisted in their duties by other technical experts from IMF North Zone Committee and Mountaineering Association of J&K.
Final results:
In Men category, Shashi Kant, Akshay Kumar and Rahul Choudhary claimed first, second and third positions respectively.
In Boys category, Abhishek Slathia, Ashish Thakur and Aman Arora emerged winners, whereas, in Girls category, Kumari Bindia Sharma, Vanshika Gomdyan and Muskan Abrol secured first, second and third positions respectively.
In Sub Junior Boys category, Aman Arora, Mritunjay Sharma and Sourav Deep Singh emerged winners, whereas, in Sub Junior Girls, Shilpa Charak, Shivani and Nitya Sharma emerged winners.
In Mini Boys category, Arun Deep Singh, Neeraj Singh and Sunny Charak claimed first, second and third positions respectively, whereas, in Mini Girls category, Asma Gul, Purvee Sharma and Neha Kumari emerged winners.
