JAMMU, Feb 28: Represented by four players from Jammu and Kashmir, Indian men and women teams created history by clinching titles in 3rd Edition of Asian Roll Ball Championship, defeating Bangladesh in both the sections at Belguam, Karnataka, recently.
Bhanu Sunil Khajuria of Jammu and Kashmir was the lone representative in men’s team, while Ruhi Rajput, Ankita Chopra and Suvidha Sareen of J&K represented the women team.
Ruhi Rajput for her extraordinary goal-keeping skills was declared as the best goalkeeper of the tournament.
The Indian boys team coached by Madhnu Sharma of Jammu and Kashmir dominated the event and defeated Bhutan, Oman and Nepal teams easily at league stage and in semifinal they got the better of Sri Lanka, while in the finals, India trounced Bangladesh by ten goals to five (10-5) to emerge champion.
In the women’s final against Bangladesh, India clinched victory from the jaws of defeat as the Indian team was trailing by three goals to nil early and then three goals to one (3-1) at half time. However, India staged a comeback in 2nd half and scored back to back goals to ultimately win the match in a close contest by four goals to three (4-3) to lift the title.
10 teams in the men’s section and 6 teams in the women’s section participated in the tournament.
While Madhu Sharma of J&K was the coach of the Indian team while another Jammuite Sudhir Singh was the Technical Official of the tournament. Anil Sharma, Chairman Roll Ball Association of J&K lauded the efforts of the State players for this outstanding achievement.
