PCJ’s Chess, Carrom C’ship for journalists gets underway

JAMMU, Dec 16: With an aim to promote sports culture among media fraternity, a two-day long Chess and Carrom Championship was inaugurated on Saturday at Banquet Hall of Press Club, here today.
The championship was inaugurated by PCJ president, Ashwani Kumar and Secretary General, Zorawar Singh Jamwal.
Chairman, Sports Committee of PCJ, Vishal Bharti and Atul Kumar, president of J&K Chess Association briefed the media persons about the rules and regulations of an event besides the motive behind organising it.
Over 30 players representing different media houses participated in both Chess and Carrom events, the finals of which will be held tomorrow at the same venue.
Speaking on the occasion, president PCJ, Ashwani Kumar said that it is an initiative to boost the basic indoor games within the club premises especially for the fraternity members as they can be a great stress buster.
“Sports is one of the important medium not only to stay physically but also mentally stress free,” he added.
Secretary General of PCJ, Zorawar Singh Jamwal in his address said that other than routine tasks, media objectives, sports events for media persons and members of PCJ is priority of the Club and such activities strengthen bond between the media persons and help in understanding each other as they spend time during sports.
“Brain storming sessions in Chess is not less than meditation and its increases the patience level of the youth,” Jamwal added.
Meanwhile on the opening day of the tournament, Mukesh Gupta topped in Chesss followed by Sunny Dua.
The last round of the chess will be played tomorrow afternoon.
However, in carom event, Samar Kerni will lock horns with Anup Kumar in the final event.
In semifinals, Samar Kerni defeated Varun Sharma and Anup outclassed Ashish Kumar.
The matches were officiated by Atul Gupta and Bindu Pathania.
