JAMMU, Apr 24: On the wrong side of her forties, ace veteran athlete, Pawan Sharma, Govt teacher by profession, who picked up running instinctively was declared best veteran woman athlete in the country during the recently concluded National Masters Athletic Meet at Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh.
Pawan registered comprehensive victory over her nearest rivals from the States who provide much better facilities to their athletes winning gold medal in 800mtr, 1500mtr and 5000mtr events
‘I started running some 8 yrs back only after my children grew up giving me some more time to pursue my passion. Today my son is studying medicine in GMC and my daughter is a higher secondary student and I can afford to train 2 hours a day,” said Pawan
‘I noticed that gradually my endurance and passion for running were increasing and I got support and encouragement from my husband and family to go on, she said adding that a group of fitness freaks of her age also provided their unrelenting support and encouragement to her.
Attributing her success in track to her husband, a faculty in SMVD University and her children, she regretted little support and recognition from the Government more particularly the Education Department, where she is a teacher.
“I don’t expect many incentives in cash or kind but I expect the department to recognise my achievements and allow me time to train regularly.
With nothing to achieve in material this valiant athlete still have dreams to participate in national events and pursue her passion of running in years to come.
