Now, outstanding sports persons from five more sports/games eligible for appointment in Govt jobs

JAMMU, Apr 27: In a bid to give push to sports culture in Jammu and Kashmir, the UT Government today amended Jammu and Kashmir (Appointment of Outstanding Sports Persons) Rules, 1998 and recognized five more sports/games for direct appointment in Government jobs to the outstanding sports persons.
As per the amended rules, now the outstanding sports persons from five more games/sports namely Baseball, Net Ball, Pencak Silat, Triathlon and Ice-Hockey shall be eligible for appointment in various J&K Government jobs. These new five games/sports have been added after serial number 39 in the Annexure-I to the Jammu and Kashmir (Appointment of Outstanding Sports Persons) Rules, 1998.
“In exercise of powers conferred by provision to Article 309 of the Constitution of India, the Lieutenant Governor is pleased to direct that the Baseball, Net Ball, Pencak Silat, Triathlon and Ice-Hockey games shall be added after Serial Number 39 in the Annexure-I to the Jammu and Kashmir (Appointment of Outstanding Sports Persons) Rules, 1998, notified vide SRO 349 of 1998 dated 22-12-1998, read with notification SRO 376 of 2004 dated 29-11-2004,” said an order issued today by the J&K Government.
As per the Jammu and Kashmir Appointment of Out-standing Sports Persons Rules, 1998, outstanding sports persons possessing 10+2 and lower qualification may be considered for appointment against a vacancy in the non-gazetted service and Class-IV posts, respectively while those possessing graduation or higher qualification may be considered for appointment against a higher post in the non-gazetted service.
The appointment of outstanding sports persons under these rules can be made only against the direct recruitment vacancies and the maximum number of appointments of outstanding sports persons against direct recruitment quota in all the services of the State during a calendar year cannot exceed 25 in any case.
List of Games/Sports recognized earlier by the Government under Jammu and Kashmir Appointment of Out-standing Sports Persons Rules, 1998 include Athletics (including Track and Field events), Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Football, Hockey, Swimming, Table Tennis, Volleyball, Tennis, Weight Lifting, Wrestling (International Styles), Boxing, Cycling, Gymnastics, Judo, Shooting, Archery, Eqestrian Sport, Handball, Rowing, Roller/Ice Skating, Skiing, Squash, Billiards and Snooker, Chess, Golf, Kabaddi, Karate, Kayaking and Canoeing, Polo, Powerlifting, Tackwondo, Yatching, Kho-kho, Softball, Wushu, Fencing and Sports for physically challenged.
To take her comments on the amendment in Jammu and Kashmir Appointment of Out-standing Sports Persons Rules, 1998, this correspondent made several calls to Secretary, J&K Sports Council Nuzhat Gul but all the calls remain un-answered.
