JAMMU, Oct 25: 3rd Zonal T20 Cricket Championship for the Deaf got underway at Jammu University ground, here today. The Championship is being organised by All Jammu and Kashmir Sports Association of Deaf in collaboration with Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu.
Six teams namely Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi are taking part in the Championship.
The event was inaugurated by Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu Prof Manoj Dhar.
In his address, Prof Dhar congratulated the organisers for organising such a noble tournament for Deaf and Dumb.
He also instructed Director Dr Daud Iqbal Baba for organising more such events for the benefit of all sections of the society.
He also emphasised on providing equal opportunity to the people like Deaf, Blind etc who can also excel in their fields by just providing them right platform in every sphere of life.
“The outcry for recognition of the Indian Sign Language (ISL) brings the championship to a very important context. Thus the championship organisers have made sure that the deaf and mute fraternity’s empowerment is brought into the forte with the help of these sportsmen who defy the proverbial statement that “handicap is an impediment to success.”
Prominent among others present on the occasion were members of All Jammu and Kashmir Sports Association of Deaf, besides Faculty, coaches, staff and students of Directorate of Sports and Physical Education.
