JAMMU, Oct 24: The Directorate of Youth Services and Sports, University of Jammu will be hosting North Zone Inter-University Badminton Tournament from October 27 to October 31, 2014.
This was informed by Prof Mohan Paul Singh Ishar, Vice Chancellor Jammu University while talking to media persons at his secretariat in Varsity, here.
He said, a total of 48 Universities across the County have sent their entries in the men’s section and 46 Universities in the women’s section, adding that around 80 teams are expected to participate in this sporting extravaganza.
Prof Ishar said that qualified referee from Badminton Association of India will be the Chief Referee of the Tournament, who will be assisted by other four qualified referees, besides other officials appointed by University of Jammu though Badminton Association of J&K State.
The Vice Chancellor further said that the matches will be played on league-cum-knockout basis at two venues of University Badminton Hall and Police Badminton Hall at District Police Lines Jammu, adding that the players will be lodged at Vashnavi Dham and Saraswati Dham near Railway Station, while the officials will be staying at Kalka Bhavan near Railway Station.
Relying to a question as to when the proposed swimming pool will be developed in the University, Prof Ishar said that the process is on and the formalities have been completed, adding that every developmental/construction work needs time and expecting development of things overnight is to cry for the moon.
Prof Ishar, however said that more than the development of a swimming pool, the development of a Sports Hostel is priority for the University to boost sports persons and promote sports in the State.
Prominent among others present on the occasion were Prof Dhian Singh Bhau, Director, Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu and Dr O D Sharma, vice president of Badminton Association of India and general secretary J&K Badminton Association.
