RAMBAN, Oct 23: Naik Balwan Chand Memorial Wrestling Pir Panjal Championship, organised by Army under the aegis of Counter Insurgency Force (Delta), concluded at Government Higher Secondary School Batote, here today.
The Olympics bronze medallist and Padma Shri awardee, Yogeshwar Dutt was the chief guest of the closing ceremony.
More than 100 wrestlers from the States of Rajasthan, Punjab, UP, Haryana and UT of J&K participated to win the title of Pir Panjal Kesari including 11 women participants of Ramban district.
The championship is organized every year to commemorate the sacrifice of Naik Balwan Chand who sacrificed his life while fighting LTTE terrorists in Sri Lanka in the year 1989 during Operation Pawan.
The Championship witnessed around 50 thrilling and nail biting matches in four weight categories, which was conducted on mats as per international standards. All bouts were conducted on knockout basis as per the existing rules of Wrestling Federation of India.
Wrestler Nisar Ahmed from Doda won the final bout in heavy weight category by beating Diler Khan from Jammu and won the title of Pir Panjal Kesari, whereas in women competition, Kavita Naik from Kota Rajasthan emerged winner by defeating Kiran Mina from Bharatpur Rajasthan in the final match.
The winners in all weight categories were awarded with medals and cash prizes worth over three lakhs along with participation certificates and mementos.
