*Miran Sahib zone wins U-17 girls kho-kho, kabaddi titles

JAMMU, May 15: Outstanding batting display by the skippers-Musaif Azad and Sarthak Peshin helped their sides to set and chase big totals respectively, however, sensible bowling display by the spinning trio of Martvan, Musaif and Praful Dhar in the depth overs helped Jammu zone to script a thrilling win over almost equally strong Bhalwal zone to lift the title trophy in the Under-14 Boys Cricket Tournament at GGHSS Bakshi Nagar, here today.
Miran Sahib zone lifted the Under-17 girls kho-kho and kabaddi titles.
The Tournament was the part of District Level Inter-Zonal Tournaments in the disciplines of cricket, kho-kho, volleyball and kabaddi, organized by the Department of Youth Services and Sports, under the patronage of its Director General, Navin Agarwal at different venues, here.
Earlier, in the summit clash of Under-14 boys cricket, Jammu zone got better of Bhalwal zone in a high scoring match by 12 runs.
Winning the toss and batting first, Jammu zone scored a mammoth total of 161 runs for the loss 2 wickets in the stipulated 15 overs. Musaif Azad top scored with unbeaten 74 runs off 35 balls, studded with 9 crispy boundaries and 4 sixes, while Arihan Gupta contributed unbeaten 38 runs off 19 balls with the help of 5 delectable fours and 2 sixes. Amaan Malik (20) and Ayush Andotra (11) were the other contributors. For Bhalwal Bhuvesh and Sarthak claimed one wicket each.
In reply, Bhalwal zone rode on a beautiful batting display by skipper Sarthak Peshin to take the score to 149 runs to lose the match by a narrow margin of 12 runs. Sarthak scored power-packed 74 runs off 26 balls with the help of 10 fours and 4 sixes, while Arya Sachiv contributed 29 runs off 25 balls including 5 boundaries. Bhuvesh and Gourav Choudhary chipped in with 12 and 11 runs respectively. At 146 for three, Bhalwal zone needed 16 runs in the last over bowled by Praful and the team managed only 3 runs to lose the match by 12 runs. Musaif took one wicket for Jammu zone. Saleem-ur-Rehman and Anju Gupta were the coach and manager of Jammu zone respectively.
Navin Agarwal, Director General Youth Services and Sports was the chief guest on the valedictory function, who distributes the mementos and medals among the winners and runners-up teams of various zones.
While addressing the players, Mr Agarwal advised budding players to play the game with sporting spirit, adding that the winning and loosing is part of the game and it is only the hard-work, determination and dedication which helps one to make it to the higher levels.
In kho-kho Under-17 girls’ final, Miran Sahib zone beat Akhnoor Zone by (3-2) points, with Harneet and Rajni being the main performers.
Earlier, in Under-17 girls’ first semifinal, Miran Sahib zone defeated Khour zone by (14-2 ) points, with Rajni and Niteka being the best scorers, while in the second semifinal, Akhnoor thrashed Satwari zone by1 turn and 5 points. Diksha and Shimpu emerged best scorers.
In kho-kho Under-14 girls final, Bhalwal zone beat Akhnoor zone by (2-1) points, with Monika and Susmita being the best scorers. In the semifinals, Bhalwal zone got better of Bishnah zone by (6-3) points, with Sapna and Deepika emerging best performers, while Akhnoor drubbed Miran Sahib zone by 1 turn and 3 points, with Aarti and Ashu emerging star performers.
In kabbadi Under-17 girls final, Miran Sahib zone beat Bhalwal zone by (67-26) points as Sumab, Arbita and Aarti palyed brilliantly. In the semifinals, Bhalwal zone beat Chowki Chora zone by (43-13) points, with Manpreet, Priya and Sonali scoring maximum points and Miran Sahib zone outplayed Akhnoor zone by (49-30) points. Suman, Aarti and Kajal scored maximum points.
In volleyball Under-17 girls final, Akhnoor zone trounced Bhalwal zone by (2-0) sets as Simran and Muskan displayed grit and guts, while in volleyball Under-14 girls Final, Gandhi Nagar beat Bhalwal zone by (2-00 sets, with Pryanka emerging star performer.
Meanwhile, in cricket Under-17 boys’ held at M A Stadium, Bhalwal zone beat Akhnoor zone by 6 runs in a close contest. Bhalwal zone scored 111 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in 15 overs. Aditya Upal top scored with 47 runs, while Harish contributed 26 runs to the total. For Akhnoor zone, Harvinder took 2 wickets and Pardeep claimed one wicket. In reply, Akhnoor zone managed to score105 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in15 overs. Sourav (38) was the main contributor. Yashu and Sandeep bagged 2 wickets each Bhalwal zone.
In another match, Satwari beat Khour zone by 39 runs.
Batting first, Satwari scored139 for 4 in15 overs. Pavit Singh (27) and Vivrant (18) were the main scorers. Vivek and Akshey claimed 1 wicket each for Khour.
Khour zone, in reply scored 100 runs in 15 overs, losing 6 wickets in the process, thus lost the match by 39 runs. Akshey top scored with 52 runs. Vasu Jamwal, Sanjot and Ashutosh shared one wicket each.
In all, 1650 boys and girls took part in these competitions.
