JAMMU, Feb 23: Government College for Women Gandhi Nagar celebrated its annual day-cum-prize distribution function, here today.
The Minister for Higher Education, Mohammad Akbar Lone was the chief guest on the occasion.
The Minister inaugurated Smart Class Room and six other class rooms in Radhakrishan Block in the College.
Dr Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the College in her welcome address read out the annual report of the college and highlighted its achievements.
Mr Lone and other dignitaries released the five annual Newsletters namely E-Odyssey by IQAC, Quest by Science Club, IRIS by Red Ribbon Club, Humanity by Red Cross Unit, Symphony by Language Club, Horizon Newsletter of the campus and Research Reporter by Research Committee of the College.
The Minister said that the Government has accorded high priority to the education sector and all efforts are being made to provide conducive environment and infrastructure in the institutions. He maintained that empowerment of women through education is vital for growth of any society and women have a greater role in shaping the future of the nation.
A mesmerizing cultural programme was also presented by the students including Geetru a traditional Dogri Geet, Kashmiri Dance, Ladakhi Dance and contemporary dance on the theme of Women Empowerment. Dandiya a traditional Gujarati dance also bewitched the audience
Later, Mr Lone gave away prizes to the outstanding students for their performance in the field of sports, literary, NSS, NCC and cultural activities. Shriya of B. Sc. Part-III was felicitated as the best student of the College and the programme ended with the vote of thanks presented by Dr Sudhanshu Sharma, Staff Secretary of the College.
Secretary, Higher Education, Sheikh Mushtaq Ahmed was the guest of the honour, while Special Secretary, Higher Education,  Anil Gupta and Director Colleges, Prof T A Kawoos were the special invitees. Prof Nalini Kohli, former Director Colleges was also present on the occasion.
