A four-day 44th Mohan Memorial Badminton tournament for Jharkhand state championship was inaugurated by Joint Secretary of Badminton Association of India (BAI) at Mohan Ahuja Indoor stadium here today.
K Prabhakar Rao, who is also Secretary of Jharkhand Badminton Association (JBA), said the tournament hold significance as it would provide an opportunity to the shuttlers to prove their mettle and make a place in the state team for the upcoming domestic championships.
Rao claimed that Jharkhand has plenty of talent in Badminton but needed to be nurtured properly to earn a place in the national and international arena.
Stating that the JBA has committed to promote the game in the state, he said it was JBA’s activities that prompted the districts such as Pakur and Sahebgunj to send players to take part in the tournament for the first time.
Organised by Badminton Association East Singhbhum, around 200 shuttlers from 20 affiliated districts of Jharkhand will vie for top honor in the men and women section of categories including sub-junior, junior and senior during the meet, which was being organised after a gap of two years, said Niraj Singh, President and Md. Rashid, Secretary of the Association. (PTI)
