UDHAMPUR, Nov 1: The three-day District Udhampur Open Table Tennis Championship commenced with great enthusiasm at the Indoor Hall, Subash Stadium, here today. The event is being organized by the District Table Tennis Association Udhampur (UTTA) to promote the sport and nurture budding talent from across the district.
The championship was inaugurated by MLA (Chenani) Balwant Singh Mankotia, who graced the occasion as the chief guest, while Saddam Hussain, CEO Municipal Council Udhampur, attended as the guest of honour. In his welcome address, Tarun Chauhan, General Secretary UTTA, extended a warm welcome to the dignitaries and participants and paid a heartfelt floral tribute to late Devinder Sharma (Munna Thanda), former General Secretary of the association, for his invaluable contribution to the sport.
In his address, MLA Balwant Singh Mankotia motivated young players to pursue sports with dedication and discipline, emphasizing the importance of physical fitness and teamwork. He appreciated the association’s efforts in creating a platform for youth and assured full support in future endeavours.
Over 150 players from different parts of Udhampur and nearby areas are participating across various age categories. Early results saw Gunvika defeating Anahita Bhau by 3–1 and Aadya Sharma overcoming Divyani Sharma by 3–0 in the U-11 Girls category to enter the final. In U-11 Boys, Unnat Magotra beat Shivansh Sharma by 3–0, while Sukant Ganotra defeated Karnik Jamwal by 3–0 to advance to the semifinals. In U-13 Girls, Sainashika overcame Devishreya by 3–1, and Prisha Sharma defeated Sharnya Sharma by 3–0 to reach the semifinals.
Prominent persons present included Vinod Baru (President UTTA), K.G. Sharma (Chairman), Ankit Sharma (Mentor TT), Prikshit Khajuria, Sunny Sharma, Akash Sharma, Akhil Bandral, Achat Magotra, Sahil Malgotra, Sunny Sadotra, and Maninder Singh. The championship will conclude with the prize distribution ceremony on November 3.
