JAMMU, Dec12: Riding on two splendid goals pelted by in form Gurjeet Singh and holding CISF to 2-2 tie in the stipulated and the extra time, Jammu and Kashmir got better of their rivals by six goals to five (6-5) via tie-breaker in the quarterfinals to seal berth in the semifinals of the ongoing 61st All India Police Hockey Championship at KK Hakhu Astroturf Stadium, here today.
The semifinals position has been cleared with SSB to take on Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab to lock horns with BSF at the same venue tomorrow.
Earlier, in the first quarterfinal match, SSB got better of Tamil Nadu by a solitary goal (1-0) and the goal scorer was Joy Chandra Singh.
In another quarterfinal match, J&K prevailed upon CISF by six goals to five (6-5) via tie-breaker. Earlier, in the stipulated time both the teams managed to scorer 2 goals each, with Gurjeet Singh netting both the goals for J&K and Major Singh managing a goal for CISF, besides netting a self-goal. In the tie-breaker, J&K scored 4 goals, while CISF succeeded in three attempts, thus J&K won the match by (6-5). For J&K, Skinder Pal Singh, Vijay Kumar, Surinder Singh and Manjeet Singh succeeded in their attempts during penalty shoot-outs, while Mangra Munda, Hariesh Sharma and Compal Lakra scored goals for CISF.
Meanwhile, Punjab defeated UP by a margin of 5 goals (7-2) in an easy contest and sailed into the semifinal. Jugraj Singh was the star performer, who pelted 4 goals, while Gaganjeet Singh, Rajpal Singh and Baljeet Singh scored one goal each. Manish Gupta was goal scorer for UP.
In the last quarterfinal match, CRPF outclassed BSF by four goals to nil (4-0). Ranjeet Singh scored 2 goals, while Mukhjinder Singh and Mandeep Singh netted one goal each.
The matches were officiated by Virender Kumar, Vijay Kishore, Jagjit Singh, Reen, Imtiaz-Ud-din, VP Sharma, Tabrez Sher, Anil Kumar, Naveed Zia, Mohd Ameen, Avinash, Ranbir Singh, Ripudaman, Deepak Kumar, Suresh Thakur, Charanjeet Singh and Sanjay Bhatia.
