J&K climbers dominate Sport Climbing Competition

JAMMU, Jan 31: J&K sport climbers almost completely dominated the 13th St. Stephen’s College Delhi’s Open Sport Climbing Competition held in the college premises recently.
Out of the eight gold medals at stake in 4 categories of Men, Women, Boys and Girls in Lead and Speed Climbing, five J&K climbers bagged six gold medals, three silver medals and one bronze medal.
Shivani Charak who was recently crowned the National Champion in Speed Climbing and Bouldering, was at her usual best in this competition to win 2 gold medals in Lead and Speed Climbing and also the title of Best Women Climber.
Similarly, Mrityunjay Sharma who bagged a silver medal in Speed Climbing in the National Championship generated terrific speed to win the Men’s Speed Climbing title. He was also crowned the best speed climber of the competition.
However, Arun Deep Singh, a climber in the Boys category, turned out to be the darling of the crowd when he startled the senior climbers to win the lead climbing gold in the men’s category. He also claimed a gold and a silver medal in Speed and Lead Climbing respectively in the boys category and was also adjudged the best lead climber of the competition. Ajay Deep Singh, in the boys category, also exhibited his fine climbing skills to bag a Gold and a Silver medals in Lead and Speed Climbing respectively.
The only J&K climber who did not strike gold in this competition was Asma Gul, who was expected to win both the titles but could win only a silver and a bronze medals in Speed and Lead Climbing respectively.
The 5-member J&K team, accompanied by the trainer Shashi Kant Sharma, has now reached Indian Mountaineering Foundation, New Delhi for participation in the 1st North Zone Speed Climbing Competition being hosted by Indian Mountaineering Foundation, North Zone Committee, New Delhi.
The team has been sponsored by J&K State Sports Council.
