JAMMU, Apr 24: 17th Jammu District Sport Climbing Championship will be organized by Mountaineering Association of J&K in collaboration with Sprawling Buds School, Bantalab on May 5, 2017, here.
The Jammu district competition will be followed by Udhampur, Reasi and Samba District Sport Climbing competitions.
About 200 climbers from various institutions of Jammu district are likely to vie for the top honours in the competition which may extend to the second day on in case the competitions are not completed on the first day.
The competitions to be conducted on the pre fabricated 40ft high Tenzing Norgay Sport Climbing Wall in Sprawling Buds school premises will be held in eight categories of Men, Women (born in 2000,1999 and earlier), Boys, Girls (born in 2001, 2002 & 2003); Sub Jr. Boys / Girls (born in 2004 and 2005) and Mini Boys/Girls (born in 2006 and after) . Whereas Men, Women, Boys and Girls will compete both in ‘Lead Climbing’ and ‘Speed Climbing’ Sub Junior Boys/Girls and Mini Boys and Girls will participate in ‘Lead Climbing’ only.

On the spot registration will also be done at Sprawling Buds School from 7.30am to 8am on May 5, 2017.
National and Zonal medal winners as well as reigning State champions in all the categories are, however, exempted from registration fees.
Shawetica Khajuria, a qualified national judge in Sport Climbing will be the President of the Jury of the Competition, while Sonam Sidharth is the Organising Secretary. The technical and logistic support will be provided by Indian Mountaineering Foundation North Zone Committee, New Delhi.
The Championship has been sponsored by J&K State Sports Council.
It is worth mentioning here that Sport Climbing is now an Olympic discipline and accordingly has been included in the 18th Asian Games scheduled to be organized at Jakarta and Palembang in Indonesia from August 18 to September 2, 2018. As such Mountaineering Association of J&K has been assiduously preparing its sport climbers for the last over 6 months for the Olympic and Asian Games as well as for other international competitions.
