Incentives big motivation for budding sportspersons: Mir

JAMMU, Mar 18: After holding series of discussions with the officials of Youth Services and Sports Department, the Director General of the Department  Jahangir Mir today chaired a meeting of the officers in his office chamber and sanctioned an amount of Rs 18, 64, 750 as scholarship in favour of the participants of 61st National School Games, 2015-16 here.
Committee members , apart from chairman  DG Sports  included Director of Physical Education University of Jammu, Joint Director Youth Services and Sports Jammu, Joint Director Youth Services and Sports Kashmir, Deputy Director (C) Directorate and Accounts Officer of the Directorate, met today for the purpose .The Committee examined the application forms .
Out of a total of 1235 scholarship forms, 835 forms of the players who participated in 61st National School Games, were received from the Joint Directors of Kashmir /Jammu.
400 application forms of scholarships including 12 medalists are under process .
“From Jammu Division, out of 534 application forms, 245 were received from Jammu, 83 from Udhampur, 57 from Poonch, 50 from Kathua, besides 41, 32, 14, 5, 4 and 3 from the districts of Reasi, Samba, Rajouri, Ramban, Doda and Kishtwar, while out of 301 application forms received from Jammu Division, 68, 48, 45, 29 and 23 were from the districts of Baramulla, Budgam, Srinagar, Ganderbal and Pulwama, besides 18, 17, 13, 11 and 10 were from Kulgam, Shopian, Bandipora, Anantnag and Kupwara,” Mr Mir informed.
The Director General approved a scholarship of Rs 10,000 each for gold medalists, Rs 7,000 each for silver medalists and Rs 5, 000 for bronze medalists, besides Rs 1750 for each participant.
He said the remaining cases will be examined separately after receipt of the relevant forms/ documents & recommendations from concerned districts.
Describing the medal winners as the gems of sports in the State, Mr Mir said that the scholarships or other incentives and perks serve as a highest motivation for budding sportspersons to blossom at the higher levels.
He said the State of Jammu and Kashmir witnessed a huge participation of over 2.50 lacs student players in domestic and national level activities.
He further said that during the year 2015, state participated in 36 national events & won 38 medals. He applauded the efforts put in by the students & the coaches to keep the State’s Flag high at the National scene and craft a space on the country’s sports map. He said that the medalists, as part of encouragement, will be felicitated at Jammu and Srinagar in the month of April.
