Govt developing stadia to provide facilities to youth: Sports Minister

JAMMU, Mar 10: J&K Forest registered 5-4 goals victory via tie-breaker over its opponent team Sher-e-Punjab in the final match and lifted the title trophy of the 3rd Rajiv Gandhi Gold Cup Football Tournament, being organized by All J&K Indira Gandhi People’s Association in collaboration with Jammu and Kashmir Football Association (JKFA) and J&K Sports Council at Government Gandhi Memorial (GGM) Science College football ground here today.
In the first half of the match, the first goal was netted by Obaid of J&K Forest in the 9th minute and put a lead of one goal over its opponent team.
The aggressive Rajesh Kumar of Sher-e-Punjab equalized the goal in the 14 minute and brought the scorecard to 1-1 goals each.
After 14th minute, players of both the team tried their level best to raise the lead, but failed and the first half ended with 1-1 goals.
During second half, players of Sher-e-Punjab and J&K Forest played in defensive manner and there was no goal till end of the second half and the match ended with an equalized  (1-1).
To decide the winner of the tournament, turn came for the penalty kicks where out of five penalty kicks by J&K Forest players, four players namely Ashiq, Umer, Shahid and Nasir converted the penalty kicks into goals and raised the scorecard to 5-1 goals.
For Sher-e-Punjab side only three players namely Raman, Paramjit and Rakesh converted the penalty kicks into goals. As two players namely Ravinder and Kumal of Sher-e-Punjab missed the penalty shoots, the opponent team registered 5-4 goals victory and lifted the title trophy of the tournament.
During the match, yellow cards were shown to J&K Forest players Arshid Ali, Obaid and Shaid Mushtaq in the 37th, 48th and 51st minutes respectively, whereas the yellow card was shown to Sher-e-Punjab players namely Ravinder Singh, Ramandeep Singh and Dilaver Sidhu in 18th, 50th and 72nd minutes respectively.
The match was officiated by Vijay Kumar, Ricky Kumar, Koushal Kumar and Hilal Ahmed.
On the occasion, Minister for Medical Education and Youth Services and Sports Taj Mohi-ud-Din was the chief guest who presented the coveted trophy to the J&K Forest team in presence of Vikar Rasool Wani, Minister for Technical Education, Zameel Thakur, President JKFA, Dr Nirmolak Singh, Vice President, JKFA, Mohan Lal, Secretary, JKFA Jammu District, Surinder Singh Bunty, Paramjeet Singh, Harbans Lal, David Masih, Yusuf Don, Feastus Sotra, Charanjeet Singh, Paramjit Singh, Daljit Singh and others.
While speaking, Taj Mohi-ud-Din said that the promotion of sports was important for the society and development of sports infrastructure has been flagged as an important component as it’s the priority of Government, adding that various steps have been initiated in this regards.
He said various stadia and playgrounds have been developed on modern lines for providing better facilities to the youth.
Giving details of the tournament, Narinder Gupta, Organizer and President, All J&K Indira Gandhi People’s Association said that as many as twenty teams from North zone, including the famed Churchill Brothers took part and were vying for the coveted trophy.
