SRINAGAR, June 4: At a brief function at the Raj Bhavan today the Governor, N N Vohra, handed over a Silver Rolling Trophy to Prof. Shaheen Altaf, Principal, Government College for Women (GCW), M.A. Road, Srinagar.
Three years ago the Governor had presented a Silver Trophy to the Principal of the Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, at Jammu, with the objective of providing a platform for the students from across the State as well as the neighbouring States to participate in annual inter-college Declamation Contests and enhance their power of expression and confidence in public speaking. However, because of the varying examination periods in the Jammu and Kashmir regions the annual contests in Jammu could not secure the maximum participation of Colleges in the Valley. In this context the Governor decided that the Government College for Women, M.A Road, Srinagar, should be enabled to organize their own annual inter-college debating contests. Rakesh K. Gupta, Principal Secretary to HG and Sheikh Mushtaq Ahmad, Secretary, Higher Education were present on the occasion.
The Governor urged Mr Mushtaq to provide the required logistic support to the Principal, Government College for Women, M.A. Road, Srinagar, for organizing this event on a proper scale, ensuring appropriate boarding, lodging and other facilities for the participants. The Governor also announced a support of Rupees two lakh to the College and urged Principal Shaheen to attempt securing maximum possible participation of contestants from the difficult areas of the State and from other States.
