JAMMU, Aug 30: The Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association’s (JKCA) state-of-the-art cricket facilities at the Hostel ground have been severely affected by the recent flash floods, leaving behind significant damage. The unprecedented rainfall on August 26, which triggered flash floods across the region, inundated the JKCA Complex with 6 to 8 feet of water. The floodwaters entered through two overflowing nallahs, causing extensive damage to the ground and its infrastructure.
The floodwaters wreaked havoc on the lower portions of the office, stores and electronic equipment, submerging office records, clothing and cricket gear, including balls. The newly installed carpet grass, which was laid to provide a better playing surface, has been covered with 3 to 5 feet of silt and slush, rendering the ground completely unusable for the time being.
In a statement issued by the JKCA, Brig Anil Gupta, Member Administration, revealed that the restoration process has already begun. Men and machinery have been employed to clear the debris and assess the damage in phases. However, the lack of functional generators and the absence of adequate water supply, due to the submergence, have slowed down the restoration efforts, making it a time-consuming task.
Despite these setbacks, Brig Gupta remains optimistic and has emphasized that the test of leadership lies in converting adversity into opportunity. He assured that all efforts are being made to ensure the facilities are restored quickly and that the preparedness of the JKCA teams will not be compromised, especially for the upcoming national-level tournaments scheduled as per the BCCI Calendar.
The devastating floods have undone the progress made by the JKCA, particularly the investment in the newly laid carpet grass, which was expected to enhance the playing experience for cricketers. Despite the setback, the JKCA is working tirelessly to restore the facilities to their former glory, ensuring that Jammu and Kashmir’s cricketing community can continue to thrive in the future.
