Srinagar, Aug 2: Under the aegis of Chinar Corps, the army in its endeavour to nurture the sporting talent of the youth organised a ‘Snow Leopard Cricket Cup’ 2015/ 2016 at Dawar whose final was played today in Gurez region of Bandipora district from 24 July to August 2, a defence spokesman said here
The spokesman said that it was part of an effort to promote the popular game of cricket & connect with people of Gurez valley while fostering sportsman spirit. The tournament was inaugurated by Commanding Officer of Army based at Dawar in the district.
“The tournament was witnessed by both military and civil dignitaries and a large number of locals. A total of 14 teams from various villages of Gurez valley namely, Wampora, Khandiyal, Mastan, Markut, Chorwan, Niru, Dawar, Achoora, Kanzalwan, Barnoi, Baraub, Purana Tulel (PTL), participated in the tournament. Teams of J&K Bank & Dawar Army unit also participated to further the bonds,” the spokesman said.
The final match was befittingly played on the Friendship Day between the teams of Khandiyal and Kanzalwan in which the former lifted the Snow Leopard Cricket Cup 2015-16.
“The matches were played with great enthusiasm and the locals of Gurez Valley came out in large number to witness and cheer up the teams. Prizes were given away by the Commander of Gurez Cantonment in a grand prize distribution ceremony. All the finalists were also presented with a medal and certificate for their performance. This sporting event was a grand success and has evoked tremendous response from the enthusiastic cricket lovers,” the defence spokesman added.
