SRINAGAR, Sept 8: Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin today stressed that cricket in Jammu and Kashmir needs an elected body to grow, rather than continuing with ad-hoc arrangements.
Speaking to reporters after conducting trials in Baramulla, Azharuddin said that without a proper association, both the selection process and the strengthening of cricket infrastructure would remain ineffective.
“Elections should happen and only then will cricket develop. There has to be a proper elected association to take charge of the affairs and ensure the game’s growth,” he said.
He stressed that while youngsters train in academies, playing on proper grounds under professional coaches helps them learn and face challenges.
“Till you have a proper association, improving cricket will remain difficult. Without it, even the selection process becomes faulty,” he added.
“You can’t run an association or administration every time. There should be elections. Only an elected body can ensure the game develops in the right direction,” he said.
He added that without adequate facilities, it was difficult to nurture young talent.
“Good players will emerge, but unless colleges and schools have proper grounds, the wider pool of talent will not improve. Without infrastructure, you won’t attract sponsors, and the game will not be taken seriously,” Azharuddin noted.
Acknowledging the Army’s role, Azharuddin said it had contributed significantly towards improving cricket in the Valley by providing facilities, especially in north Kashmir.
Earlier, Azharuddin held cricket trials for budding players. The trials were organised by the Indian Army and Human Aid Society, in collaboration with Dr. Ashai’s initiative.
