JAMMU, Nov 6: The All India Inter University Fencing (Men & Women) Championship 2024-25 inaugurated at the University Gymnasium Hall, University of Jammu, here today.
Prof. Meena Sharma, Dean Planning at the University of Jammu, inaugurated the championship in the presence of distinguished guests, players from various Universities, University officials, and local community members. The event being held from November 6 to 10, 2024, brings together 103 teams from Universities across India, with over 1,200 athletes competing.
Special guests included Shiv Kumar, DIG J&K Police Jammu, who spoke on the value of sports for youth development and as a means to combat negative influences like drug abuse. Guest of honour Rashid Ahmed Choudhary, an International Referee and Competition Director, along with other notable guests like Krishan Kumar, High Performance Manager Fencing (SAI), and Dr. Deepak Singh Patyal, Chief Coach (SAI), NCOE Patiala, were also present.
Dr. Daud Iqbal Baba, Director of the Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, welcomed attendees, highlighting the significance of sports in fostering discipline, unity, and teamwork among students. He emphasized the role of the University of Jammu in nurturing athletic talent, contributing to the pride of both Jammu and the nation.
The event also featured a fencing demonstration, showcasing the skills of participants. The ceremony proceedings were managed by Vandna Sharma and Lakshika Jamwal, while Prof. Komal Nagar, Assistant Director of the Directorate, delivered the vote of thanks.
Others present on the occasion were Dr. Imran Farooq, Dr. Akhilesh Sharma, Irfan Goni, Vimal Kishore, Vikas Karlopia, Ravish Vaid, Gagan Kumar Shamsher Singh, Jai Bharat, P. D. Singh, Sumeet Kumar, Harinderpal Singh, Inderjeet Singh, Sanjeev Kumar, Ashok Singh Bali, Richa Mandla, Manjeet Kotwal and officials of the participating teams.
Meanwhile, in the Men’s Epee Individual competition held today, Sufyan from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, emerged as the champion, winning the Gold Medal. Deepak from Kurukshetra University put forth an outstanding performance to secure the Silver Medal.
The Bronze Medals were jointly awarded to Shubam from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, and Zala Harsh Vardhan Singh from Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University, Patan. Following the medalists, Sathe Soham from Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Solapur University claimed the 5th position, while Lokesh from Chandigarh University, Mohali, finished in 6th place. Rohith Soman from Yenepoya Deemed to be University ranked 7th, and Neeraj Kumar from Dr. Rammanohar Lohia Avadh University, Ayodhya, UP, secured the 8th position
