JAMMU, June 18: Talent, it is said is what you possess and genius is what possesses you. These lines have been proved correct by the Jammu and Kashmir’s ace Para athlete, Chandeep Singh, who despite all odds, converted his disability into an ability to emerge golden boy of the country and the State as well by winning gold medals in Asian Taekwondo Championship at Vietnam and Kathmandu Kyorugi & Pomsae International Taekwondo Championship at Nepal recently.
Having won medals at the International level in Taekwondo, Chandeep has the honour of being adjudged as the World’s Fastest Skater by US based Golden Book of World Records as also by the Assist Book of World Records. Chandeep has a long journey of excellence in sporting world as after shining in football, athletics and skating at school, zonal and national levels, he has the distinction of winning big haul of medals in Taekwondo at the International level.
In an exclusive interview with EXCELLSIOR, this world-class sportsperson of Jammu and Kashmir, son of a Government Employee, Surinder Singh, hailing from Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar, Channi Rama, Jammu, talked about his achievements and his zest and zeal to achieve excellence.
To a question as to when he started his sporting career, the 19-year boy, Chandeep said that he is simply married to sports and games and had started participating in sporting activities from a tender age of 7 years, adding that he won medals at the school level in football, athletics and skating, but became more dedicated, determined and focused after he lost his both the limbs in electric shock in 2011 to set an example for others. He said that his mantra to succeed is to handle difficulties and adversities with bravery and courage.
Reacting to a question as to how he felt after receiving the sobriquet ‘Fastest skater in the world’ and won medals at the International scene, Chandeep said that the feeling was ecstatic rather blissful as it was like ‘dream come true’ for him.
When talked about how he balances sports with studies, Chandeep said apart from his dedication of setting goals for himself, it were his parents and the mentors who served like beacon lights to guide and goad him in both educational and sporting fields, adding that after completing the course of Electrical Engineering from MBS College of Engineering and Technology, Jammu, he will be pursuing for Indian Administrative Services (IAS) to show the world that adversities if tackled properly can become beauties. “Facing challenges is an art. Mental toughness is the name of the game,” he added.
Apart from his parents, he attributes his success to International Taekwondo coach, Atul Pangotra.
In his message to the budding sportspersons of the State, Chandeep advised them to be honest and sincere and be focused to achieve goals and said that by doing right things at right time, a right choice always follows.
It is pertinent to mention here that Chandeep won gold in 2nd Kyorugi and Pomsae International Taekwondo Championship-2018 by participating in 75 kg K41 category at Nepal from May 17 to 20, 2018 and won another gold medal in Asian Taekwondo Championship held at Vietnam in last week of May, 2018 by participating in K41 and K42 75 Kg category. Chandeep has also emerged as the State gold medallist in Under-16 Quads and Inline competitions. He has also certificates in football and athletics to his name.
