SRINAGAR, Feb 17: The 9th National Snowshoe Championship-2025 commenced at the picturesque Sonamarg, with over 110 athletes from 15-17 States and Union Territories participating in the event. The championship, organized by the J&K Snowshoe Association in collaboration with the Department of Tourism under the Snowshoe Federation of India, aims to establish Sonamarg as a leading winter sports destination.
The event was inaugurated by former J&K cricketer Sayim Mustafa, alongside CEO Sonamarg Development Authority Mohammad Bhat and Tourist Officer Basharat Ahmed. Mustafa expressed his happiness to see such an event hosted in Sonamarg, calling it a new hope for winter sports in J&K.
Mir Mudassir, president of the Snowshoe Federation of India, also visited the venue, emphasizing the commitment to promote Sonamarg as a winter sports hub. He mentioned that Snowshoe events are easier to organize without requiring major infrastructure upgrades, unlike other winter sports. In the men’s race, Waseem Raja of J&K won the gold, while in the junior boys’ race, Ladakh athletes dominated.
