JAMMU, Mar 11: The 10th Shaheed Bhagat Singh Sub-junior Men Hockey Championship, organized by Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh Foundation under the aegis of Hockey J&K, commenced at KK Hakku Stadium, here today.
Rajeev Sharma, president Hockey J&K was the chief guest of the inaugural function.
Speaking on the occasion, he said that the youth is the future of the nation and to keep youth away from drugs and anti-social activities sports is the best way to engage them. “Hockey J&K is making all efforts to lift the standard of Hockey in J&K and J&K Sports Council is extending full support under the leadership of Nuzhat Gul Secretary Sports Council,” he said.
He appreciated the efforts of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh Foundation in organizing the championship and assured all possible help to organize such championships in future too.
Dr Taran Singh, president of the Foundation thanked Hockey J&K for his support in organizing the event. He said that Shaheed Bhagat Singh always said that healthy and honest youth can build a great nation and to propagate the philosophy of Shaheed-e-Azam such events are organized by the Foundation regularly in J&K.
Today’s two matches were played. In the 1st match, Khalsa Club beat Akali Kour Singh Club by 9 goals to nil. Kawalpreet Singh scored 5 goals in the 3rd, 18th, 20th, 37th and 48th minutes of game, whereas 2 goals scored by Harpreet Singh and Gurpreet and Rajveer netted 1 goal each.
In the 2nd match, Sittu Club defeated KK Hockey Club by 4 goals to 1. Jasvinder Singh scored the goals in 38th and 69th minutes of the game, while Harsheed Singh and Navjot Singh scored one goal each for Khalsa Club and Arun Kumar netted a lone goal for KK Hockey Club in 5th minute of the game.
The matches were officiated by Balmeet Singh, Dalvinder Singh, Anjali and Meenakshi Thakur.
