Wrestling continues to retain sheen as a rural sport: Slathia

VIJAYPUR, June 22: Former Minister and National Conference State Secretary, Surjeet Singh Slathia today said that Wrestling continued to be popular sport with youth across Jammu and hoped that holding of events will inspire youngsters to make their mark in competitions.
“Being one of the oldest sporting discipline, Wrestling remains a passion with its practitioners and fans whose number is no less, notwithstanding the challenge being posed by other popular games”, Mr Slathia said while giving awards to winner and runners-up Wrestlers in the final of Baba Noni Peer Annual Wrestling Competition played at Village Trindiya, Ramgarh in Vijaypur Assembly Constituency.
Mr Slathia expressed hope that the fierce competition between veterans in the game will provide much needed motivation and inspiration to the budding Wrestlers, who have been putting their hard toil to excel in Wrestling.
He urged the youngsters to participate in the game in a big way and prepare for various national and international events with a sense of commitment.
“Like any other sports, the youngsters can take wrestling as a profession”, he said adding that this calls for resilience, devotion and hard work.
The former minister expressed satisfaction over the keenness being evinced by rural youth in various sports and said this will not only keep them in good stead physically but also sharpen their mental growth.
Sports as a career has emerged as a big option for enterprising youth in this era, he said and referred to big mark made by young people in various games at national and international level.
While appreciating the organizers for holding the event, Mr Slathia wished the participating Wrestlers success in Wrestling field.
Prominent among others present on the occasion were Sarpanch Bharat Bhushan, Sham Lal, Hans Raj, Kewal Kanth, Narayan Dass, Sardari Lal and Prem Pal.
