Stafanie Taylor’s aggressive 75 helped West Indies prevail over South Africa by two wickets in a thrilling Super Six thriller of the Women World Cup at the Barabati stadium here today.
West Indies made heavy weather of a modest target of 231, but Taylor’s onslaught put the team on the course and they ultimately crossed the finishing line with 4.3 overs to spare. Taylor had an able support from Kycia Knight(46) as the two put together 126 runs for the second wicket.
She hit some breathtaking shots in her 78 balls effort,which was filled with nice sweetly-timed boundaries and a towering six.
But fell trying to loft one out of the ground, only to hole out at long-off. Sensing an opportunity post her departure, the South African inflicted some quick blows and from being placed comfortably at 146/3, the West Indians were tottering at 196/6.
A Deandra Dottin’s breezy cameo (24 from 21-balls) and a compose knock from Shemaine Campbelle (33 from 42) took the team to the finishing line.
The South African bowlers put up a valiant effort while defending a modest target.
Dane van Niekerk was pick of the bowlers and ended with a figure of three for 47, while Marizanne Kapp scalped two at the expense of 42.
Earlier,riding on combine effort from Trisha Chetty (45), Cri-zelda Brits run out (44), Mignon du Preez(31) and Dane van Niekerk(33 not out) took South Africa to a respectable scorre. (UNI)
