Hockey Championship gets underway at Poonch

Poonch, June 10: The Poonch city today witnessed the grand opening of a 1st ever state level mega hockey tournament which is being organized by Shaheed Manjeet Singh Volleyball Club in the memory of Martyr Dy.Sp Manjeet Singh, who laid down his life while fighting with militants at Poonch Bus Stand a few years ago.
In the inaugural match, Waryam Club Poonch held Mighty Khalsa Club Jammu to a (2-2) draw in a tough contest.
The tournament was declared open by Mr Jehnagir Hussain Mir, MLC in a clourful function.
Former outstanding International Player, S Mahinder Singh who represented the Country during 70’s and 80’s was honoured by Mohd. Tariq Khan and Matinder pal Singh NIS Hockey Coach..
The teams from Jammu and Kathua really found themselves in an excellent atmosphere for sports and praised the organizing committee for such a wonderful tournament.
A total of eight teams have confirmed their participation and the matches will be starts from Monday on knock out basis, said, S. Matinder Pal Singh, NIS Hockey Coach.
ADC S Jatinder Singh, Tehsildar Haveli Nisar Shad besides prominent citizens which included, S Netar Singh, K.K kapoor, Prem Luthra, S. Rajinder Singh,, S Manjeet Singh Sh M.L Sharma, Principal HSS Boys Poonch, S Ajeet Singh Jeet, president T T Association Poonch were also present on the occasion.
Mohd Tariq Khan, is the organizing Secretary of the championship.
