JAMMU, May 13: Rohit Singh of National Academy High School, Udhampur won the coveted boys title in the Udhampur District Sport Climbing Championship which concluded at Sprawling Buds School, here today.
In a close contest with upcoming climbers Sayed Ali Abbas of the same school and Raghuvir Sharma of Vivek Niketan High School, Udhampur, Rohit displayed good technique and temperament to clinch the title. Syed Ali and Raghuvir bagged the 2nd and 3rd positions resepctively.
However, climbers from Vivek Niketan came back very strongly to sweep all the medals in the girls category with Shabana, Arti Sharma and Vaishali Sharma winning the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals respectively.
Similarly, in the Sub Junior Boys category also, Vivek Niketan High School made a clean sweep with Pankaj Sharma emerging victorious against equally talented climbers Veer Singh and Sunny Singh of the same school.
The most interesting contest was, however, witnessed in the Mini Girls category in which the budding climbers competed like seasoned climbers and won the applause of the crowd. Ultimately, Deepika Rathore, Oas Sharma and Mehak Bandral, all students of National Academy Udhampur claimed the first three positions respectively.
In Sub Junior Girls, Diksha Bahuguna of National Academy clinched first position, while Ritika Sharma and Ira Gupta, both of Vivek Niketan claimed second and third spot respectively.
In Mini boys, Ranveer Thakur of Vivek Niketan won first place, while Arjun Bali and Lakshdev Singh, both of National Academy claimed second and third spot respectively.
In all, 112 students including 29 girls competed for honours in the district championship. However, competitions in the Men’s and Women’s categories were not held for lack of adequate participation.
In the concluding function, Ram Khajuria, Secretary Indian Mountaineering Foundation North Zone Committee, New Delhi who is also the General Secretary of Mountaineering Association of J&K was the Chief Guest who distributed medals and mementoes among the winners.
The competition was sponsored by J&K State Sports Council.
