Supriya of AP wins high jump gold; Lavanya of TN impresses

JAMMU, Dec 13: With a jump of 1.60 meters, Supriya of Andhra Pradesh clinched gold in High Jump, while tall and well build Lavanya of Tamil Nadu, the 2-time gold medalists in junior nationals and 5th place winner in 35th National Games last year, impressed with her motor ability, style and skill in the ongoing National Level Women Sports Competitions, being organized by the Directorate General Youth Services and Sports under Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan (RGKA) at BSF Stadium, Paloura, here.
Nikita of Maharashtra bagged silver medal in this event by crossing the bar with a height of 1.58 meters and the bronze medal in this event went to Aungkali of Nagaland covering 1.56 meters. However, Lavanya of Tamil Nadu, who missed the medal by a whisker and claimed the fourth place, was most impressive with her skill and style. This 5 feet 9 inch tall athlete has the distinction of winning gold medal in junior national heptathlon also.
In 200 meters, Chander Lekha of Tamil Nadu won gold, Richa Sharma of HP clinched silver and Indu Prasad of MP claimed bronze, while in Javelin Throw, Karti Saini of Delhi, Santosh of Haryana and K Vinothini of Tamil Nadu won gold, silver and bronze respectively.
In 3000 meters, Seema Devi of Punjab, Meenu of Delhi and Kuljeet Kour of Punjab clinched gold, silver and bronze medal respectively, while in 400 meters, Ayana Thomas of Delhi clinched gold, Veerpal of Punjab won silver and the bronze medal was bagged by Sarmaishtha of Bihar.
Meanwhile, in Table Tennis U-25 Women, Tamil Nadu, Chandigarh, Karnataka, Gujarat, Delhi, Telangana, Uttrakhand and Kerala qualified for the quarterfinals.
Earlier, Karnataka defeated Tripura by (3-0), Rajasthan outplayed Maharashtra (3-0), Chandigarh outplayed Punjab by (3-2), HP trounced AP by (3-2), Bihar outclassed Tripura by (3-1), Kerala drubbed Manipur by (3-0) and Tamil Nadu got better of Tripura by (3-0).
In Badminton U-25 Women, .Nagaland beat Rajasthan by 2-0, Uttrakhand defeated Manipur by 2-1, Gujarat trounced Tamil Nadu by 2-0,  Maharashtra outplayed  Punjab by 2-0, Haryana prevailed over West Bengal by 2-1, Delhi pipped AP by 2-0 and Kerla defeated Himachal Pradesh by 2-1.
