JAMMU, Feb 19: Sumiya Kousar of Mountaineering Association of J&K left today for Delhi to participate in an Eco Cycling Expedition from Delhi to Kathmandu (Nepal). She is among the 5 girls selected across the country for this prestigious expedition.
The expedition being organized by “Stand With Girls”, an NGO shall start from Delhi on 1st March and conclude at Kathmandu on 15th March. Prior to the commencement of the expedition Sumiya shall attend a 10-day coaching cum practice camp at Delhi. It is the first time that such a cycling expedition exclusively for girls is being organized.
Immediately after her selection in the cycling expedition Sumiya had met Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, who encouraged her to do her best in the expedition and bring laurels to the state. Chief Minister also promised her all possible help in the shape of equipment and financial assistance. However, Sumiya has been sponsored by Government College for Women Parade, Jammu in which she is studying.
Meanwhile, participants of a sport climbing coaching camp which Sumiya was attending at Sprawling Buds School, Ban Talab, Jammu gave her an emotional send off and wished her all success. It may be mentioned here that Sumiya is an ace climber of Mountaineering Association of J&K who had recently won a silver medal in the North Zone Sport Climbing competition held at Delhi.
Prominent among others who attended the send off included General Secretary and Joint Secretary of Mountaineering Association of J&K, Ram Khajuria and Shawetica Khajuria; Vice President Yogeshwar Kumar, Executive members Rakesh Goswami and Sonam Sidharth; trainer Shashi Kant Sharma and climbers Ambreen Fatima, Sakshi Magotra, Deepika Dutta and Juhi Jamwal.
