Sports Meet for Physically Challenged gets underway

JAMMU, Mar 13: Sports Meet for Handicapped/Deaf and Dumb of District Jammu in the disciplines of Athletics, Tug of War, Cricket, Judo  got underway at Guru Harkrishan Public School, Nanak Nagar, here today.
In all, 76 boys and girls drawn from various organizations/institutions are taking part in the competitions.
Earlier, Rishi Kumar Bhagat, Deputy Director Youth Services and Sports, Jammu declared the Meet open in a simple and well attended function.
While addressing the participants and the officials he said, the main objective of this sports meet is to build self-confidence to mentally challenged and physically handicapped students.
The competitions are being organized by the Department of Youth Services & Sports as part of Annual Calendar of Activities, under the patronage of Navin Agarwal, Director General Youth Services and Sports and under the supervision of Sukhdev Raj DYSSO Jammu.
Prominent among those present on the occasion were Rupinderjeet Kour, Assistant Director Youth Services and Sports; Roshan Bhan, Principal School for Hearing Handicapped J&K Samaj Kalyan Kendra, Shaheedi Chowk, Jammu and Reeta Poply, Principal Guru Harkrishan Public School, Nanak Nagar, Jammu.
Earlier, in cricket, Samaj Kalyan Kendra and Sanklap Institute comprising of two teams  A and B (Deaf & Dumb) played cricket match of 7 overs a side, in which team B won the match by three wickets.
Team A won the toss and scored 32 runs for loss of four wickets in 7 overs. Rohit Kumar remained top scorer for team A with 13 runs, while Vijay Kumar scored unbeaten 5 runs.
Chasing the target of 33 runs in seven overs, team B scored required runs in 4.3 overs, losing 4 wickets in the process. Pankaj Lakhat remained top scorer with 15 runs, while Sunil Kumar scored 11 runs.
In tug of war for girls, Samaj Kalyan Kendra drubbed LBM School for Sightless Girls, Roop Nagar by (2-0), while in tug of war for boys, Samaj Kalyan Kendra defeated Sahyog India by (2-1).
