*Inaugurates 2nd State Universities Sports C’ship

JAMMU, Mar 23: Secretary, Jammu and Kashmir State Sports Council, Waheed-Ur-Rehman Parra today inaugurated the 2nd State Universities Sports Championship 2017-18 in which about 15 teams from different Universities across the state are participating in the disciplines of Volleyball, Cricket, Football, Table Tennis, Badminton and Basketball.
Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu, Prof RD Sharma, Director Sports and Physical Education University of Jammu, Dr Daud Iqbal Baba, Controller Examination, Sanjeev Mahajan, NSS Coordinator University of Jammu, Prof Jasbeer Singh, Dean Education and Director Distance Education, Prof Darshana were present on the occasion.
While addressing the participants on the occasion Parra said that sports help in fostering holistic development of an individual besides inculcating a sense of discipline, team spirit and togetherness. “Sports are important to channelize the energies of students in a positive direction, ” he added.
He further said it is the endeavor of government to provide requisite sports infrastructure and facilities to ensure maximum youth participation in sports activities to hone their talent.
The Championship is being organized by the Directorate of Sports & Physical Education, University of Jammu. The Championship had begun yesterday but was formally inaugurated today.
In Football (Men), BGSB University Rajouri beat CIBS Leh by four goals to two (4-2), while Cluster University Kashmir blanked SKUAST Jammu by eight goals to nil (8-0).
In Cricket (Men), Kashmir University defeated Central University Kashmir by 16 runs. Kashmir University scored 85 runs in 10 overs, while Central University Kashmir contributed 69 runs in 10 overs.
In another cricket match, SMVDU Katra beat CIBS Leh by 38 runs. SMVDU scored 108 runs in 10 overs for 2 wickets, while CIBS Leh scored 70 runs in 10 overs for 7 wickets.
In Volleyball (Women), Cluster University of Jammu defeated University of Kashmir by 3-0 sets with set score (25-20, 25-22, 25-22); CIBS Leh drubbed SMVDU Katra by 3-0 sets with set score (26-24, 25-17, 25-10).
BGSBU Rajouri beat Cluster University of Kashmir by 3-2 sets with set score (25-20, 28-26, 19-25, 19-25,15-8).
In Badminton (Women), University of Jammu defeated University of Kashmir by (2-0) sets. In singles, Danveer Kour beat Farheen by 21-15, 21-5, while in doubles Suvidha and Deepika beat Farheen and Umaya by (21-7, 21-7).
In another match, SKUAST Jammu beat SMVDU Katra 2-0. In Singles, Shivali beat Shivya Manhas (21-6, 21-10), while in doubles, Shivali and Ravneet Kour defeated Kanika and Shuguna Gupta by (21-19, 21-11).
In Badminton (Men), University of Jammu beat BGSBU Rajouri 3-0, Central University Jammu trounced RSS Kot Bhalwal 3-0, NIT Srinagar beat SKUAST Jammu 3-0 and Cluster University Jammu drubbed SMVDU Katra 3-2.
