Sohit, Shreya, Kritarthi win medals in Fencing

JAMMU, July 31: Three fencers of Jammu and Kashmir shined in 1st Khelo India Women Fencing League cum Ranking Tournament by giving a spectacular performance, held at Talkatora Stadium, New Delhi from July 25 to 30.
The tournament was sponsored by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Government of India, wherein about 700 fencers from all over the country participated.
Fencer from Reasi, Sohit Thakur won individual Gold in cadet category along with prize money of Rs 50000, while ace fencer and international medallist, Shreya Gupta again brought laurels for J&K by winning Silver medal in junior sabre category along with cash prize of 40000. She also achieved 8th Ranking in senior category with a cash award of Rs 10000.
She (Shreya) lost to Shruti Joshi of Maharashtra in junior final by 15-12 in a tight finish, while Kritarthi Kotwal also excelled in the League and won Bronze medal for the J&K UT in senior sabre category besides achieving 5th ranking in junior sabre category. She won cash prizes of 30000 and 10000 respectively for her splendid achievements.
Chavi Sharma and Mayank Sharma also played well and secured 8th and 6th rankings respectively with a prize of 10000 each.
President of J&K Amateur Fencing Association, M J Sharma appreciated the hard work and extraordinary achievements of these fencers for bringing laurels for the Union Territory.
Secretary, J&K Sports Council, Nuzhut Gull congratulated medal winning fencers for achieving milestones. “J&K Sports Council is firmly behind these players who are bringing J&K UT on the national map of the country in sports and shall provide required infrastructure as well as equipment on priority,” she said.
She mentioned that it’s the hard work of coaches of J&K Sports Council including Shotu Lal and Rachna Jamwal, and tireless efforts of seniors like Rashid Ahmed and Ujwal Gupta.
