JAMMU, Oct 15: Notwithstanding the claims made the Government that every effort is being made to see sportspersons blossom at the national and international scene, the shortage of funds with the Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) has stopped the chess players of Jammu District to participate in the State Level Inter-District Tournament at Srinagar, which was scheduled to be held from today.
Sources said that the DYSS had held trials of the chess players in the age groups of Under-14, Under-17 and Under-19 boys and girls in the months of May and August, 2015 and selected 29 players to represent Jammu District in the Inter-District Tournament.
“These selected players after being called for representing Jammu District in the State Level Tournament were asked by the Department that there is lack of funds with it and it is not in a position to send the players to Srinagar. However, the Department requested the parents of the players that it will send the players for participation if they spend the money themselves, with the condition that it will later-on be reimbursed by the Department,” sources added.
As per the officials of the Department, the chess players were asked to be part of the Judo contingent to tour Srinagar on the same dates, but they refused to accompany the judo players and their In-charge and asked for separate facilities.
When contacted, the District Youth Services and Sports Officer Jammu admitted that his office was short of funds and not in a position to provide separate facilities to the chess players for participating in the State Level Tournament.
