JAMMU, Feb 26: Shivani Charak and Mrityunjay Sharma of J&K, medalists of last year’s National Sport Climbing Championship have been selected by Indian Mountaineering Foundation, New Delhi to participate in the Indian team selection camp for 18th Asian Games to be held at Jakarta and Palembang in Indonesia from August 18 to September 2.
It is worth mentioning that Shivani Charak has been selected on the basis of consistent excellent performance in all the forms of climbing in the National Climbing Competitions for the last three years. In the year 2015 she became the National Champion in Speed climbing besides winning a bronze medal in Bouldering. She followed this feat by winning 3 Silver medals in the next National Competition in 2016 at Bangalore. Last year, she became the double national Champion in Speed climbing as well as in Bouldering besides bagging a silver medal in Lead climbing. In June 2017, Shivani, an 11th class student of Government Higher Secondary School, Domana, also represented the country in the IFSC World Cup in Bouldering.
Similarly, Mrityunjay has also performed well in the National Climbing Competitions. He won a Bronze medal in Lead climbing in 2014, another bronze medal in Speed climbing in 2016 and three medals including a silver in Speed Climbing and 2 bronze medals in Lead climbing and Bouldering in the 23rd edition of the National Climbing Competition at Indore in 2017.He also represented the country in the IFSC World Cup in Bouldering in 2017. Mrityunjay is an 11th class student of Oriental Academy Senior Secondary School, Jammu.
Shivani and Mrityunjay are among the 16 climbers, both boys and girls, selected by IMF for the selection camp from throughout the country. Besides Shivani and Mrityunjay, Adarsh Singh of Delhi and Shivpreet Pannu of Punjab are the other climbers from the North Zone.
The selection camp is likely to be held in the first week of April at international standard lead and speed climbing walls and a bouldering Gym in the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) complex, New Delhi.
