KARGIL, May 26: Beating Star Galaxy Kaksar by four wickets, Sheeena Kings’ XI Budgam lifted Late Captain Saurabh Kalia Memorial Cricket Cup, played at Shah Thatha Khan Cricket Stadium, Kaksar, here.
Thirty-two teams of Shingo Zone participated in this knockout tournament which was organized by Indian Army under Operation Sadbhavana in collaboration with a local youth club of Kaksar and NGO Sewak.
The final match was witnessed by Haji Anayat Ali, Chairman, Legislative Council, J&K, General Officer Commanding, Forever in Operations Division, civilians, military officers and officials and sports lovers.
It is pertinent to mention here that Captain Saurabh Kalia was an officer of the Indian Army who was killed during the Kargil War while being held as a prisoner of war by the Pakistan Army. He along with five other soldiers of his patrolling team was captured alive and kept in captivity in Kaksar village near LOC where they were tortured, then killed.
Since 2003, the locals of this area organise this Late Captain Saurabh Kalia Memorial LOC Cricket Tournament with support of Indian Army.
