JAMMU, Mar 17: ‘Sammilan 2016, the techno-cultural festival of Model Institute of Engineering and Technology (MIET) was inaugurated today at its Kot Bhalwal Campus, here.
Over 3000 students from over 35 Institutions and Universities across India are participating in the 2-day national-level event.
The event which started in 2006 is J&K’s largest student festival offering 65 events in diverse domains of technology, culture, performing and creative arts and sports.
The festival was inaugurated by Dr Arun K Gupta, Chairman and Dr Renu Gupta, Director, MIER Group of Institutions.
The inaugural function was studded with performances by talented musicians and vocalists from the MIET Music Club, scintillating dance performances by the MIET Dance Club and a special star performance by local rapper Parry G, who paid rich tribute to the culture and ethos of J&K.
The dignitaries also released a MIET Newsletter at the inaugural function of event.
Two technical workshops on 3D Animation and Robotics were organized as a run-up to the festival which were attended by over 200 students from all technical institutions in Jammu. For the first time sports events were also organized which included 5-a-side street football, speed chess and MIET-open table-tennis which were a huge hit with the youth of the state.
The event offered a total prize money of Rs. 2 lakhs across 60 events in all categories inviting huge participation from institutions in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan including J&K.
Two students currently enrolled in Failing University, China were also among the participants. Sammilan was sponsored by Aircel, Punjab National Bank, IEEE, ISTE, IETE, Raymond, Max, Zebronics, Talla Jewellers, Engineers Institute, Medicare, Jammu Links, INIFD, 92.7 Big FM, Robotech Labs, Innovians Technologies and Fashion Fortune.The Fashion Show inter-college competition Paridhaan was the highlight of Day 1 and much appreciated by the audience.
Dr. Ankur Gupta, Director, MIET welcomed the gathering and described Sammilan as an embodiment of the positive attitude, initiative and ability to overcome adversities of the MIET students, which has helped establish Sammilan as the largest student festival in J&K.
Maj. Gen. (Retd.) Prof. S.K Sharma, AVSM, Director, Academics presented the formal vote of thanks. Other dignitaries present on the occasion included Prof. S.K Badyal, Director, MBSCET, Prof. N. R Sharma, Dean Academics, MIER College of Education, Prof. G.S Sambyal, Professor of Computer Applications, MIET and Jasvinder Singh, Head HR, Aircel.
Day-2 of Sammilan will include the Star Night with Electronic Dance Music performances by DJ Nawed Khan and DJ Willy from VH1 Supersonic for the first time in J&K.
