JAMMU, Mar 13: District Police Poonch today started three days “Rural Sports Mela” at Boys Hr Secondary School Surankote which was inaugurated jointly by S. Jatinder Singh Johar, SSP Poonch, Mushtaq Ahmed, Principal Degree College Surankote and Mushtaq Ahmed, Principal Boys Hr. Secondary School Surankote.
The purpose of the event is to provide an opportunity to the people of the remote part of the Surankote to relive and reactivate their traditional sports like horse riding, stone lifting etc. which is slowly getting faded from the popular sporting culture. While speaking on the occasion SSP Poonch lauded the role of people of Surankote in general and youth in particular for keeping the sport activities alive in the district.
The event will cover Volleyball, Kho-kho, Kabaddi, wrist holding, stone lifting, and horse race. In the inaugural the mamtch was played between Habib Club Surankote and Govt. Degree College Surankote in which Habib Club Surankote won the match.
The inaugural function was attended by Abid Hussain Tehsildar Surankote, Mushtaq Hussain BMO Surankote, Ajay Sharma, DySP Surankote, SHO PS Surankote and other prominent and a large public from remote corner of Surankote including Marah, Buffliaz, Sanai, Sangla, Pamrote, Gunthal, Fazlabad and its adjoining areas witnessed the event.
A volleyball match was organized by Shaheed Manjeet Singh Volleyball Club at Sports Stadium Poonch. The match was organized in the memory of Shaheed Manjeet Singh- DySP (Hqrs) Poonch who scarified his life while fighting with the militants in Poonch town on March 14, 2003. The match was played between Indian Army and Shaheed Manjeet Singh Volleyball Club in which shaheed Manjeet Singh Volleyball Club won by 3-0 sets.
N.S Brar Commander 93 Infantry Brigade was the chief guest on the occasion whereas S. Jatinder Singh Johar, SSP Poonch was the guest of honour on the occasion.
