JAMMU, Dec 9: Scripting convincing victories over their rivals in the semifinals, Punjab and Tamil Nadu have sealed berth in the finals and will lock horns with each other in the summit clash of the ongoing 62nd National School Games Under-19 Football Championship, being organized by the Directorate of Youth Services and Sports, under the aegis of School Games Federation of India at various venues, here.
Punjab defeated Uttar Pradesh by three goals to nil (3-0) in an easy contest. Punjab players dominated the game from the word go and made splendid moves to keep the opposition under pressure. Rohit Jhamat scored 2 goals for Punjab in 36th and 65th minutes, while the third goal was netted by Mohd Danish in 70th minute of the match.
In another semifinal, Tamil Nadu got better of KVS in a close contest by (4-2) via tie-breaker. None of the teams could manage to score in the stipulated time and failed to score in extra time also and the match was only decided in penalty shootouts, wherein Tamil Nadu prevailed over KVS by (4-2). For Tamil Nadu, the goals were scored H Madhav Vignesh, B Allanda and Suhail Basha, while for KVS, the goals were scored by Jassulua and Avleen.
Earlier, in the quarterfinal at GGM Science College Football ground, Uttar Pradesh defeated Rajasthan by two goals to nil (2-0). For UP, Akleem Khan pelted the first goal in 49th minute, while Manoj M. scored the second goal in 61st minute.
In another quarterfinal at Jammu University ground, Punjab outplayed Chandigarh by a solitary goal and the goal scorer was Manjinder Singh, who netted it in 63rd minute of the match.
At MA Stadium, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) got better of Chhattisgarh by four goals to three (4-3) via tie-breaker. Abhik, Arun, Jassi and Vivek were the goal scorers for KVS, while B Gourav, Abhishek Dubey and Pranay Bahadur netted the goals for Chhattisgarh. Earlier, none of the teams managed to score any goal in the stipulated time and the extra time as well.
At BSF Paloura ground, Tamil Nadu defeated Jharkhand by four goals to three (4-3) via tie-breaker. Both the teams failed to score any goal in the stipulated time and the extra time as well. The goal scorers for Tamil Nadu were S. Prethis, B Allen Rahu, D. Keerthi and V. Shasi Muga, while the goal scorers for Jharkhand were Mukul Ekka, Anil Kum-Minj and Raj S.
The semifinal matches were officiated by the panel of experts including AR Paddar, Showkat Waza, Tariq Ahmed Khan, Mohd Shafi, Vipin Kumar, Sanjay Verma, Danesh Singh, Sarfaraz Nabi, Nisar Hussain and Vivek Slathia.
Now, Punjab will take on Tamil Nadu in the summit clash at 11 am at BSF Paloura ground tomorrow.
Minister of State for Transport and Youth Services and Sports, Sunil Kumar Sharma will be chief guest on the occasion, while Secretary Youth Services and Sports will be the guest of honour on the concluding function to be held at 11:45 am.
