Poonam upsets Jyoti in LIC North Zonal

CHANDIGARH, Jul 8:
Top seeded Grandmaster Sriram Jha of Delhi defeated Giriraj Rathi of Bikaner in 48 moves in the men’s section of the three-day LIC North Zone Chess Championship 2015 which started at Hotel Park View in Sector 24 here today.
In the women’s category, Poonam Sharma created an upset by defeating internationally rated player Jyoti Mehra of Udaipur. The championship is being organised by LIC Northern Zonal Office New Delhi and hosted by LIC Chandigarh under the technical support of Chandigarh Chess Academy.     A total of 16 divisions are being representing in the championship, These are Delhi (three division), Jaipur (two Division), Ajmer, Jodhpur, Karnal, Shimla, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar, Rohtak, Udaipur, Bikaner and Chandigarh. A total of 19 men and 16 women players are participating.
There are six international rated players in the men category and two international rated players in the women category. Senior Divisional Manger, LIC Chandigarh Subhash Chander was the chief guest. Veena Bisht, Manager P and IR were the guest of honour. Smt Bhanu Jain, member LIC Sports Promotion board and Sh V D Narayan, zonal representative were also present on the occasion.     Results: Men (round 1): Sriram Jha (Delhi) bt Giriraj Rathi (Bikaner), KK Malhotra (Ludhiana) lost to Kirti Sharma (Jalandhar), Hitesh Issar (Karnal) bt Mukesh Kumar (Delhi II), Naveen Mathur (Jaipur) lost to Sunil Bansal (Chandigsrh), Amit Soni (Delhi II) lost to RS Khalsa (Jodhpur), Rakesh Kumar (Rohtak) lost to Suraj Prakash (Jalandhar(), Shamshad Bhatti (Delhi II) lost to Anurag MIshra (Ajmer), DN Jangid (Jaipur) drew with Vikas Gupta (Karnal).
Women (round I): Nagarathna M S (Delhi) lost to Neetu Ahluwalia (Jaipur), Poonam Sharma (Karnal) bt Jyoti Mehra (Udaipur), Mitali Thadani (Jaipur) bt Ramandeep (Jalandhar), Reshma Dhanvaani (Ajmer) lost to Vandana Khurana (Jalandhar), Nisha Gupta (Shimla) lost to Ritoo Anand (Delhi II), Romila (Amrotsar) lost to Ranu Chaturvedi (Ajmer), Arti Kapoor (Delhi II) bt Savinderjeet Kaur (Chandigarh).
