JAMMU, Aug 29: Various educational institutions and departments commemorated the National Sports Day with great enthusiasm and fervour which is celebrated every year on the birth anniversary of Hockey Legend Major Dhyan Chand.
The Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu celebrated National Sports Day at the University Campus, wherein Vice Chancellor Prof. Umesh Rai was the chief guest whereas Dean Academy Affairs Prof. Naresh Padha, Prof. Arvind Jasrotia, Registrar, Prof. Rajeev Rattan Sharma Director CDC, Prof. Prakash C. Anthal, DSW and Ranjeet Kalra, Member J&K Sports Council, Rashid Ahmed Choudhary, DySP International Fencer, Manmeet Singh, Gatka Association and many others were guests of honour. The event was organised under the leadership of Dr Daud Iqbal Baba, Director Sports and Physical Education, JU.
Prof Umesh Rai, in his address, enlightened the gathering that the Day embraces sportsmanship and brotherhood that comes with sports. National sports day is celebrated graciously all over the world to honor national sports teams for their outstanding performance for their respective countries.
Kathua Campus of University of Jammu organized its maiden felicitation programme on the occasion with the aim to felicitate the sportspersons who have brought laurels in the field of sports for Kathua district at national and international level. Dr Meenakshi Kilam, Rector, Kathua Campus JU talked about the celebration of the Day all over India for honouring the dedication and contribution of the nation’s sports heroes and champions for bringing laurels for the country.
Department of Physical Education of the Government College of Education (GCOE) Jammu in collaboration with NSS unit also celebrated the National Sports Day.
Tug of war competition was organised to inculcate the feeling of true sportsmanship among the students and to enhance their physical skills. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Kulvinder Kour, Principal of the College and Guest of Honor, Dr Zubair Calas spoke on the occasion.
Ramandeep Kralia, PTI, Physical Director and NSS PO Dr Shubhra Jamwal appreciated the efforts of the students. Prof Shapia Shameem Bhatti, Prof Sarita Dogra, Prof Seema Kumari, Prof Vinay Lata, Prof Neeraj Verma, Dr Maansi Sharma, Prof Rubina Yasmeen, Dr Anju Bala, Prof Rajinder Kour, Dr Sushma Bala, Prof Deep Kumar Bangotra, Prof Anuradha, Dr Shalini Sharma, Prof Radhika were also present on the occasion.
The Day was also celebrated by the Department of Physical Education and Sports of Govt SPMR College of Commerce Jammu by organizing a Tug-of-War (Men and Women) competition. Three teams of students of semesters 2nd, 4th and 6th in the men’s section and two teams of women students of semester 4th and 6th participated in the competition. Students from semester 6 won the competition in both categories.
Birthday of Major Dhyan Chand was also celebrated by the SAI Centre Jammu by holding a day long program competitions in Volleyball, Badminton, Basketball and Football besides several recreational games were also conducted among the staff, coaches and SAI trainees. Four teams were formed amongst staff and trainees for the competitions which were named after eminent sportspersons of the country namely PT Usha, Milkha Singh, Prakash Padukone and Abhinav Bindra, wherein Milkha Singh group was declared as overall champions by the chief guest, ADC Rakesh Dubey in presence of the other staff members and Incharge of the Centre.
On this occasion, KV No.1 hosted a motivational session of ‘Meet the Champion’ wherein Bavleen Kour, Rhythmic Gymnast interacted with the students of KVs. She was deputed by the Sports Authority of India to interact with students. The event was attended by GS Mehta, Assistant Commissioner, KVS RO Jammu, Amit Walter, Principal KV No.1 Jammu and Romi Amrit, Vice Principal.
Remembering Major Dhyan Chand, the Hockey Legend of India, the Govt Degree College Udhampur celebrated Day by organising knockout Tug of War and Volleyball competitions in the College premises wherein Shivalik and Tiger Clubs emerged winners of the competitions which was organised under the overall supervision of College Principal, Prof Romesh Kumar Gupta.
Celebrating the Day, GDC Mahanpur organized a maiden inter-college Table Tennis Tournament (Men) wherein three College including GDC Billawar, GDC Basohli and the host College participated. The whole programme was organised under the patronage of College Principal, Dr Rakesh Kumar Koul, in which GDC Basohli secured the first position and Parul Singh of GDC Mahanpur was the first runner-up.
Govt Degree College Kathua celebrated the Day by holding Kho-Kho matches in both male and women sections which was inaugurated by the chief guest, College Principal Prof. Sumanesh Singh Jasrotia. The chief guest in his address paid tribute to the Hockey Legend Major Dhyan Chand by recalling his contribution to the country and the Indian sports in particular and honoured the elite players of the College with medals and trophies.
GDC Jindrah conducted a marathon and Tug-of-War competitions to celebrate the Day wherein 100 students participated. Anil Sharma, chairman of All Panches and Sarpanches J&K was the chief guest who awarded all the winners with medals and certificates.
The Day was also commemorated by the Department of Physical Education and Sports of GDC RS Pura by organising Chess and Carrom matches under the patronage of the College Principal, Prof. Sunil Uppal and supervision of Kajal Premi, Physical Director of the College.
Pt. Prem Nath Dogra Govt. Degree College Samba organised a Tug of War competition on the birth anniversary of Major Dyan Chand wherein both male and female students participated under the supervision of the College Principal and Physical Director Dr Surinder Kumar Sharma and Sanjeev Jamwal.
GDC Ramnagar celebrated the Day under the patronage of Dr Udhey Bhanu, College Principal and paid tribute to sports legend Dhyan Chand on his birthday. The students who participated in various games and sports and brought laurels to the Institution were felicitated by the Principal and Sports committee.
The Department of Physical Education, GDC Banihal organized a function under the overall supervision of the College Principal Dr Manohar Lal and paid tribute to Hockey Legend, Major Dhyan Chand. The Principal stressed upon the importance of sports for physical and mental well being and also spoke about the achievements and biography of Indian Hockey Legend in the years 1928, 1932 and 1936.
Government Degree College Doda also observed the Day by holding a hockey match at Sports Stadium in presence of various officials including Tariq Ahmed Malik Physical Education Master, Afroz Hussain PET, In-charge Zonal Physical Education Officer Vijay Manhas under the banner of Youth Services and Sports.
Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS)-an organisation of Department of Youth Affair and Sports celebrated the day across Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh by holding various sports activities including Volleyball, Tug of War, Sack race, Marble spoon race, Badminton, Yoga, Kho-Kho at different blocks of Jammu.
The Day was also observed by Govt. HSS Agharjitto Reasi with great enthusiasm and fervor by organising matches in the discipline of Kho- Kho, Carrom as well as Quiz Competition wherein large numbers of the students participated.
Govt HSS Chiralla commemorated the Day by holding inter-house sports activities in which 176 students of different classes participated in the event wherein Principal Hem Raj Chalotra presided over the function.
The Day was also celebrated by the Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYS&S) at Dharmari Reasi organising various sports events wherein Apni Party vice president and former Minister and DDC Councillor Aijaz A Khan was the chief guest.
District Youth Services and Sports celebrated the Day at Indoor Stadium Kargil wherein EC Works, LAHDC Margil Mubarak Shah Ngvi was the chief guest.
The Day was also celebrated by the DYS&S at Govt HSS Narrari Bala to pay tribute to Hockey Legend Major Dhyan Chand.
The Day was commemorated at Army Public School Udhampur by holding various sports activities under the supervision of Swaran Singh DYSSO Udhampur. A friendly handball match was also organised at Handball Synthetic Court Mini Stadium in this regard.
The Department of Youth Services and Sports Jammu also held various functions to celebrate the Day at Khel Gaon Nagrota in which Dhar Partil AIG Teach was the chief guest of the event.
To create awareness among the students Shiksha Niketan School organised an inter-section essay writing competition on International Day against Nuclear test as well as National Sports Day for the students of 10th class.
The National sports Day was celebrated with great pomp and show in SIKS HSS School Boys Udhampur, wherein Deputy Inspector General (Police) Jenab Mohd Suleman Choudhary was the chief guest and Dr. Yogeshwar Gupta President, Municipal Council Udhampur and Dr Vinod Kumar SSP Udhampur were the guests of honour.
Shemford Futuristic School Jammu celebrated the Day which is marked as the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand- the legendary hockey player. The celebration was conducted in a phased manner wherein students of Grade I to Grade X participated. The students were also felicitated by the Academic Director of the School, Vijay Puri with medals that they won under various categories in different events.
On the 117th birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand popularly known as “Jadugar of Hockey”, Balvinder Singh renowned RTI/Social Activist along with other former National players, former International umpires and coaches Iqbal Singh and others paid floral tribute on the photo of Dhyan Chand installed at KK Hakku Stadium.
The Department of Youth Services and Sports Leh commemorated the Day at Open Stadium Spituk, with the theme ‘Sports for Unity’. Joint Director, Youth Services and Sports UT Ladakh, Moses Kunzang was present as the chief guest, while Everester Rigzen Dolkar; Marathon runner Jigmet Dolma; Cyclist Lakzes Angmo and other sports persons were present as special guests.
A women Hockey exhibition match was organised to celebrate the Day by the Sham Lal Hockey Club between the team of Sham Lal Hockey Club (W) and Khelo India Hockey Centre (W), which was won by Sham Lal Club by 2-0 goals.
The National Sports Day was today celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervor at Government High School, Deeli wherein a large number of students participated and carried out various sports activities. About 100 boys and girls participated in sports competitions in different disciplines of Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, Carom and recreational games.
Indian Army organised a Volleyball tournament at Rajouri to commemorate the National Sports Day wherein a total of 20 teams participated. The event was conducted with the aim to raise awareness about the values of sports, discipline, perseverance; sportsman spirit, team work and the people were encouraged to emphasize the importance of fitness and being healthy. The final was played between Khawas Club and Lam Club in which former emerged winners of the tournament and were awarded with Rs 20000 cash prize.
In the memory of the country’s pride and famous international hockey player Major Dhyan Chand, and on his birthday, a ‘Walk & Run’ competition was organized at Group Centre CRPF Jammu which was flagged off by the chief guest, PS Ranpise, IG, CRPF Jammu Sector, in which Officers, Subordinates officers and Jawan of CRPF from various offices participated.
To celebrate the National Sports Day, an exhibition Handball match was organised by Arun Sports and Social Welfare Trust (ASSSWT) inviting senior players of the game at SD Sabha School Ground Jammu. The budding talent of Handball mesmerizes those champions of the past, coaches and other officials with their performance on the ground.
A Kabaddi match was organised and Indoor Sports Complex Subash Stadium Udhampur between Udhampur A and Udhampur- B team which was won by Udhampur- B by 4 points in the presence of Ashok Kumar Sharma general secretary Kabaddi Association of Udhampur, Vikas Dogra Judo Coach, Ram Kumar Kabaddi Coach and others.
SD Tara Puri Public School Gandhi Nagar under the banner of Youth Talent Search Forum, a poster making competition was organised for the students of class 5th to 12th wherein School Secretary ND Sharma was the chief guest.
